Dark Tourism is one of the oldest forms of tourism in the world. I believe it to be very important to modern society as it allows us to make sense of the past, history and many tragic events that have happened. It is highly educational and hopefully can teach us to not make the same mistakes again. It is also a way to pay respect and to open up difficult conversations with people.
The psychological impacts on a Dark Tourist can be quite demanding. Most Dark Tourists are well prepared and research a site fully before visiting. There are some tourists that may visit a site by accident or visit a site without knowing much about it and this can be quite a shock. For example, nothing can prepare you fully for a visit to Auschwitz for example and the visit usually is disturbing.
Unfortunately there are no official figures or numbers on Dark Tourism but we do know that visits to sites of death and suffering have risen significantly due to shows like HBO Chernobyl and the Netflix series Dark Tourist. Chernobyl Tours have reported a 40% rise in tours since the show aired.
This course will help you understand the different parts of Dark Tourism in an easy to understand way. It is a short overview and not designed to cover the academic debates. The course also covers very briefly Dark & Curious topics which encourages you to do your own, further research if interested.

I'm an International Tourism Management graduate. I specialised in Dark Tourism for a major project at University. This was before it was popular in the media so I have completed a lot of original research.
I have a small business page called Dark Tourist Trips which has over 6000 followers & recently won funding from a start up business competition.
I have worked for various tourist attractions in Scotland & have a very good knowledge of the tourism industry.
