The science of this course: our emotions affect our body, and our body affects our emotions. Dance is a great means, in general, of expressing and expanding our emotional states. This course, in particular, creates extra opportunities for kids to express and cope with feeling shy and anxious, and to learn to feel confident also.
The spirit of this course: all of our emotional states are perfect - kids will learn to love themselves and feel ok to be shy, overwhelmed, brave, outgoing....all the things!
Welcome dancers and some information about your dance course!
Working the feet - the fundamentals of ballet, and every type of dance!
Learn how to stretch and warm the body up for dancing. An amazing way to build body awareness, strength and flexibility. Kids also need to practice taking instructions on moving specific parts of their body, and this is a great introduction to building this skill.
Learn how to count music and keep rhythm for dancing, with this fun rhythmic pattern game.
A calm game to express feelings through movements, and strengthen the verbal and physical connection in emotions. This will help kids manage their emotions and connect to their bodies.
Fun follow-along dancing to the music! Just do the best you can and move to the music!

A magic trick to practice balance! Kids will learn 'retere' position and how to 'develope' their legs (a pre-exercise for kicks and jumps!)
Kids will practice embracing and expressing their many emotions by creating movements to show how their body feels when they are in various moods. They will practice embodied empathy and connecting with others emotionally by trying out my expressive movements as well.
Fun follow-along dancing to the music! Dancers do their best to get the moves, but mostly enjoy moving to the music. Kids will gain body coordination and practice common dance moves.
A fun and simple spring points ballet exercise, drawing on learnings from ballet classes 1 and 2.
Stretches teach kids body awareness, build strength and flexibility, and warm up the body for our best dancing and movement, and prevent injury.

A game to connect feelings to our bodies, and learn to manage emotions.
Fun follow-along dancing to the music! Ending off with a dance party and kids can make up their own dance moves.
Does your kid love to move & dance, but feel too shy, overwhelmed, or anxious to join a group dance class just yet?
This foundational dance class in ballet, jazz, hip-hop and creative movement, uses principles of dance & movement therapy to encourage participation for kids who are feeling shy in dance class, and (optionally) prepare them for group dance class.
Participants get to:
* Experience the joy & challenge of dance, on their own terms
* Learn dance moves, concepts, terminology and techniques & build body awareness, coordination, strength and flexibility
* Embody emotional management techniques to cope with feeling shy (and more!)
* Build confidence
With more familiarity of what goes on in dance class, kids will have less overwhelming factors to cope with on their first day of group dance class! They will also benefit from emotional coping techniques in this course to be better prepared to handle the nerves of social situations; such as dance class and otherwise.
The course can also be used on its own as introduction and practice for foundational dance techniques and emotional growth through movement.
This course consists of 3 dance classes, that kids can repeat to learn and practice dance exercises. Each class is broken down into exercises in: ballet, stretches, dance floor, emotions in movement, and grooving & improv! The recommended format is to have kids practice Class #1 1-2 times a week for 5-6 weeks, then have them move on to Class #2, and then Class #3.
