Caricature is a drawing of a real life character, such as politicians and artists. However, the caricature emphasizes and exaggerates the person's characteristics in a humorous way, as well as in some circumstances accentuates gestures, vices and habits particular to each individual. To be a caricature is to be the object of comicity, irony or having something peculiar in the face or body, taken to exaggeration, to humorous satire or as a criticism of customs.
Historically, the word caricature comes from the Italian caricare (to carry, in the sense of exaggerating, to increase something in proportion).
The caricature is the "mother" of expressionism, where the artist unveils the impressions that the nature and soul left on the person's face.
Distortion and the use of few strokes are common in cartoons. It is said that a good caricature can still capture aspects of a person's personality through playing with shapes. Its use is common in political satires; sometimes this term can even be used as a synonym for grotesque (the artist's imagination is prioritized over the natural aspects) or burlesque.
