Cognitive Distortions
Psychiatrist Aaron Beck led research on cognitive distortions in the 1960’s during his development of a treatment method called cognitive behavioural therapy.
Cognitive distortions are thought patterns that cause people to view reality in inaccurate and negative ways. They cause thinking errors — usually with a negative bias.
Since these distortions cause errors in thinking, learning to identify and overcome them is an important skillset for both mental clarity, mental well-being, and better thinking.
Most people can experience occasional cognitive distortions. So, it’s important that we learn to recognize them.
How do we overcome cognitive distortions?
The key to overcoming cognitive distortions lies in recognition and reinterpretation.
Recognize that a negative thought may be built on a cognitive distortion. And reinterpret that negative thought to disassemble unsound reasoning.
Based on these two tools, let’s expand our skills in this video session.
