What you'll learn

  • You need an extra bedroom, you need to make a storeroom, you need a downstairs toilet? you just need some basic measuring and I show you every step of the way.
  • How much will it cost? well how big is the room? what are the local prices of materials? call the builders merchants to get some quotations for materials
  • Initially, it's a single-handed job, but fitting the drywall/plasterboard you may need an extra pair of hands, as the sheets are heavy, I include safety tips.
  • From marking out the position, to erecting and fitting the studding, to fitting the plasterboard sheets, and fitting the door frame. Step by step instructions.

  • Safety First3:31

Neglect safety, yes maybe we've all done this at one time, decided to cut something or do a job because we want to get it done and out of the way.

I start by showing you a respirator, this is vital if you are cutting materials that produce a lot of dust like concrete, plaster Etc.

Eye protection I think is the most important they come in many different forms like a facial visor, goggles, or safety glasses.

We sometimes neglect head protection if we are working alone thinking no one will drop anything on our head, but you can easily be working alone and something can fall on your head or you can turn around and hit your head on something.

Shoes or boots with a hardened steel toe cap are a consideration.

What we don't appreciate is how much damage can be done to our ears over a long period I can tell you that I suffer from hearing loss and this may be due to me working in the construction industry over a lifetime and in those early days safety equipment just wasn't available. There is one other to consider as safely equipment and that is a mobile phone or cell phone, if you get injured and you're working alone you can call for help.

  • I show you how to fit the stud wall, here you construct a wall to whatever size.13:15

Please read and watch the lectures all the way through and takes notes as you do.

First I mention some safety because you've got sharp edges, so you want some gloves that you can handle small screws but prevent injury.

There are two parts to the studding, one which is what we refer to as a the U section for the floor and wall, then there is a C section so it's got two extra lugs so this one is fitting in the middle, I show how these are fitted together. I show you different screws for fixing the metalwork.

I explain where the parts and how to cut them, then once the studding is done, I explain the specific way the plasterboards are fitting to give strength to the wall.

  • Fitting the plasterboard8:19

You may need two people to handle these sheets.

Before fitting any sheets, plan any electrical work like lighting, power outlets etc. And Plan for insulation for thermal or sound.

Do the cutting on the floor as I do then you are not keep lifting them. There is a specific way of fitting sheets which I explain fully, this gives the partition it's strength.

I show how to apply a corner detail if your plan includes a change of direction for the wall.

Requirements

  • No experience required, only basic measuring, a few woodworking hand tools, a cordless drill/screw driver, included is a list of tools and materials in PDF format.

Description

Do you need an extra bedroom? do you need a home office? or a downstairs toilet? I don't think there is anything else in the home improvement sector that would add value to your property more than adding an extra room. This project is a minimal outlay and maximum return. You just need some basic measuring and I will show you every step of the way. The main structure or studding for this petition is not wood, so no sawing, it's easier, the studding is made from metal which is very easy to cut, no grinder or hacksaw. The petition is covered with drywall/gypsum board/plasterboard. I've included how you can fit a door frame. The petition would not need any plastering; you just fill the joints and then it can be painted or wallpapered. As with all my courses I tell everyone that whatever they spend on tools and equipment this will be less than paying someone for labour. The biggest expenditure for tools you would need for this project is a cordless screwdriver/drill, these have come way down in price and you don't need to get a pro quality tool you can buy these now for as little as £25 or $30 but this tool is vital for the project.
