Welcome and thank you for taking this course! I'm excited to teach you these proven techniques that I use on my servers. We've got a lot to cover!
3 Main Types of Servers
Windows doesn't have a terminal by default like a Mac computer does. I'll cover how to get on the same playing ground on a Windows machine by using puTTY and Super puTTY (saved sessions, multiple windows). Then I'll cover connecting to a VPS on a Mac and show you a way to keep shortcuts to your VPSes, using a tool that you can download on your Mac.
There are a lot of VPS hosting providers out there. I haven't been able to find any that beat RamNode's price and once you find a host you like, you tend to stay with them. RamNode has some unique differences from other SSD VPS hosting providers, such as you are the root user (makes things easier) and you can install Windows on a KVM VPS - the cheapest Windows VPS you can find as long as you have a Windows license already.
We're going to first change our root password to something that we can remember.
We'll SFTP into our server with Transmit for Mac and FlashFXP for Windows - FlashFXP is cool because it's like Transmit where it'll upload to the server when you've saved the file you're editing.
We're going to remove Apache that comes installed by default, and we're installing other packages that we'll need, including Nginx as our new web server (to replace Apache).
The base configuration files that we'll use for the vhost....using Nginx over Apache because it has easier syntax for the configurations and it can handle more requests compared to Apache on a server with the same specs. Set up virtual host.
We'll install the database server and GUI administration tool. localhost vhost.
Now that you've got all of your dependencies and a blank database setup, we can let WordPress do its installation.
Use some free services to stress test your server. This gives you the confidence that what you've done is a great solution. Keep RAM and CPU around X.
All of the skills you've learned can transfer to save yourself money or to make extra income selling to your clients in multiple ways - including hosting their site after you've built it, or focus just on hosting by itself. We'll cover how you can take these skills and use them in a profitable hosting business where you can build monthly income with minimal effort.
Now that you've done the hard work of the initial setup, adding sites is a simple few steps.
Whether you're selling hosting to clients or hosting your own sites, you'll want backups just in case something goes wrong. This will show you how to automate this task every day. I keep 3 weeks to a months worth of backups on S3 and it takes up so little space that I haven't paid anything since I started doing this a year ago.
We used s3cmd for the daily backup script and we can use it to save our configurations, because as your business grows, you'll need more servers - you can transport the scripts easily between servers.
As you're building your server, it's great to practice your skills. You can do that by wiping your server clean, but be warned, it erases everything you've done!
This script isn't guaranteed and will most likely have updates to improve usability. It's OK for you to use, but you cannot give it away and definitely cannot sell it. I'm going to go through the process twice and show you how you can test this for yourself as many times as you'd like to get comfortable. The video will also not be cut or sped up, that way you can see how long it literally takes to setup a site with this method!
So you want to learn how to host your own WordPress sites? You're in the right place! This course will teach you not only how to host your own sites (to save money), but also how you can make recurring money by hosting client sites.
Think of this course as a Do-It-Yourself guide to learning proven techniques that will allow you to easily set up a server yourself and make recurring monthly income from hosting websites. Say goodbye to paying a high price for an all-inclusive web hosting company or expensive hosting 1-click add ons.
Whether you've built a VPS server before or you're looking to offer your clients web hosting, there will be plenty to learn from this course. Each lesson has a worksheet with the links and commands discussed in the corresponding video.
We'll cover a lot in this course, from comparing a Virtual Private Server against the commonly used shared hosting, purchasing a VPS, using the command line on both Mac and Windows, installing the server packages you'll need and configuring them, and also installing the database and then the WordPress files.
We'll stress test your new server so you can have the confidence in what you're building and if you plan on selling hosting plans to clients, you'll have the confidence behind what you're offering. You can easily charge $30/mo per client for the value that you'll be able to offer after taking this course.
I'll show you how to host multiple sites on the same server that you're already getting an incredible deal on, which further increases your profit margin.
Automation helps build processes that every business needs to succeed, and it also makes a team of 1 feel like so much more. I'll show you how to set up automated daily back ups of your database and as a bonus, I've developed an exclusive command line script that takes everything you'll learn and automates building a server for you. In about a minute you can go from a fresh server to the standard Hello World! blog post you get with a WordPress installation.
I look forward to teaching you how you can make money hosting WordPress sites!
