Create a Client Network by Hosting WordPress Sites

There are a lot of VPS hosting providers out there. I haven't been able to find any that beat RamNode's price and once you find a host you like, you tend to stay with them. RamNode has some unique differences from other SSD VPS hosting providers, such as you are the root user (makes things easier) and you can install Windows on a KVM VPS - the cheapest Windows VPS you can find as long as you have a Windows license already.

We're going to first change our root password to something that we can remember.

We'll SFTP into our server with Transmit for Mac and FlashFXP for Windows - FlashFXP is cool because it's like Transmit where it'll upload to the server when you've saved the file you're editing.

We're going to remove Apache that comes installed by default, and we're installing other packages that we'll need, including Nginx as our new web server (to replace Apache).

The base configuration files that we'll use for the vhost....using Nginx over Apache because it has easier syntax for the configurations and it can handle more requests compared to Apache on a server with the same specs. Set up virtual host.

We'll install the database server and GUI administration tool. localhost vhost.

Now that you've got all of your dependencies and a blank database setup, we can let WordPress do its installation.

Use some free services to stress test your server. This gives you the confidence that what you've done is a great solution. Keep RAM and CPU around X.

I keep 3 weeks to a months worth of backups on S3 and it takes up so little space that I haven't paid anything since I started doing this a year ago.

We used s3cmd for the daily backup script and we can use it to save our configurations, because as your business grows, you'll need more servers - you can transport the scripts easily between servers.

As you're building your server, it's great to practice your skills. You can do that by wiping your server clean, but be warned, it erases everything you've done!

This script isn't guaranteed and will most likely have updates to improve usability. It's OK for you to use, but you cannot give it away and definitely cannot sell it. I'm going to go through the process twice and show you how you can test this for yourself as many times as you'd like to get comfortable.
