According to a recent study conducted by a major Cyber Security firm, less than half the online population understands the term "Firewalls" - or know if they have one enabled on their PC.
Firewalls are even more important in a corporate or work environment. It not only keeps the corporate network safe - but can also optimize traffic routing and provide a whole range of other benefits.
If you are connected to the Internet, you are a potential target to an array of cyber threats, such as hackers, keyloggers, and Trojans that attack through unpatched security holes. This means that if you, like most people shop and bank online, are vulnerable to identity theft and other malicious attacks.
A firewall works as a barrier, or a shield, between your PC and cyberspace. When you are connected to the Internet, you are continually sending and receiving information in small units called packets. The firewall filters these packets to see if they meet certain criteria set by a series of rules, and after that blocks or allows the data. This way, hackers cannot get inside and steal information such as bank account numbers and passwords from you.
Basic firewalls such as the one included in your operating systems, only monitor incoming traffic by default. This may give you a false sense of security. Keep in mind, outgoing traffic, with your credit card information, bank accounts, and social security number is not protected. A good firewall will monitor traffic in both directions. That is, both your incoming data and your outgoing data, keeping your private information safe. In addition to preventing unauthorized access to your PC, it also makes your PC invisible when you're online, helping prevent attempted intrusions in the first place.
Firewalls are one of the most critical parts of a network. It’s the first line of defense that your system has against attacks or unwanted visitors, and it makes all the difference in ensuring your data is protected. pfSense is a highly versatile, open source routing and firewall software. I grew up in a small town in India. A friendly child, my home was troubled. I withdrew into my shell, becoming aloof and angry. At age 15, I started working in a factory where I labored 12 hours/day with only $2 as a daily salary.
LAST CHANCE BLOWN
Reading business magazines in the factory corner, a dream was born. Could I improve my life? Feeling certain I was destined for freedom, for a 15-year old - it seemed like a pipe dream. Education was the only way out. My friends left for college, but I couldn’t afford to pay. Had I blown my last chance?
A YEAR’S SALARY
In 1995, a new computer institute threw its doors open in our town. Tuition was greater than a year’s salary, but I scraped together funds for the first class where I found my passion: programming. I met my wife there and we fell madly in love. Our marriage was disapproved of! Ultimately I had to run away from home with only a suitcase full of clothes. After our marriage, we traveled to Canada and started a new life.
THE NEW LIFE
I had no contacts or resources, but I was determined to improve my life. I realized education and the right training was the only way for me to achieve my goals.
Somehow I managed to acquire modest education.
From there I went on to become a technical leader and CTO in multiple startups.
All this happened because of education and training. So I am very passionate about learning and sharing knowledge.
I favor pragmatic solutions over complex ones.
I favor scrappiness over lavishness.
I favor fast execution over endless deliberation.
I favor serving the CUSTOMER over my own desires to build something cool.
I favor bending the rules (without breaking them) over abiding by them.
I believe in the resiliency and adaptability of the human race, and I know we can overcome any challenge if we work together.
I'm a technical aficionado, with core passion towards learning and teaching new technologies. I strongly believe in sharing knowledge is growing knowledge.
I'm in the software profession for the past 5 years and have my fair pick of exposure to various technologies with core concentration on SAP. I did a brief stint of 4 years with an global fortune 500 MNC, who is also an industrial mammoth.
To realign my professional stream with knowledge domain, currently I perform the role of Software engineer/content developer consultant for TetraNoodle Technologies. We work with various startups on cutting-edge and interesting use cases.
As part of my profession I concentrate on creating and streamlining courses, that help technical enthusiasts to understand and apply latest technologies, products and domain subjects.
