Learn to create contemporary wall art with gold leaf using beginner-friendly texture, painting, shading, and sealing techniques, with no experience required and materials found at home.
Prepare a 16x20 inch canvas by mixing plaster of Paris and glue to create a smooth, lump-free base, applied in one direction, then let dry overnight to strengthen the canvas.
Outline a design with a thick texture paste made from marble powder or plaster, with fabric for thickness, applied by a palette knife to yield a three-dimensional flower on canvas.
Apply white to the base, shade with light tones and brown in small areas using a soft brush with minimal water, keeping the stretch canvas budget-friendly as it dries.
Shade flower petals with a white base and subtle red accents using uneven brush strokes to create lighter and darker tones. Start from the center and extend toward the edges.
Color the edges of the flower petals with golden color using careful brushwork, avoiding water, then prepare for gold leaf application (and optionally silver color for next steps).
Paint the flower shading in turquoise lightened with white across the area in small, separate patches, keeping colors unmixed and using a light palette or aluminum foil.
Apply delicate gold leaf to a painting using a water and oil solution, a brush, and a cotton ball, carefully pressing edges to highlight the flowers.
Sketch stems with a fine brush and pencil, then apply gold leaf to leaves using a dilute water solution, embracing gaps and imperfection before drying 24 hours and varnishing.
Apply a varnish to seal and protect the artwork from dust, and enhance its look, using a thin broad brush to spread evenly from the corner, including the sides.
