Description

Forget unconscious bias training. This course will help raise your awareness of the unhelpful thoughts and behaviours we all encounter, challenge that thinking, and create lasting, positive behavioural change to enhance our patient encounters. A more practical endeavour when challenging our own assumptions and natural bias in any situation, whether you are in a clinical role or non-clinical but are still patient facing. Your patient or client interactions will be more productive, positive and pleasant for all! And not only with patients, this training will help you in other areas of your life including with friends, family and relationships at work.

In this course you will learn important definitions surrounding bias, stereotyping including how these processes operate in our brains so you can think before you speak. You will also develop an understanding of how unconscious bias can impact our clinical decision making and affect a patient's health outcomes from your care.

As health care professionals, it is essential to provide high-quality care to all patients, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, or any other personal characteristic. This course aims to equip health care professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to practice conscious inclusion and promote equitable care for all patients.

The course will cover various topics, including:

  1. Understanding unconscious bias: You will learn how unconscious bias can affect their interactions with patients and how to recognise and mitigate their unconscious biases.

  2. Cultural competence: You will gain an understanding of different cultures and how to provide culturally sensitive care. The course will address topics such as communication, health beliefs, and cultural practices.

  3. Intersectionality: Health care professionals will learn how intersectionality impacts patients' experiences and health outcomes. The course will cover how multiple identities and social categories intersect and affect access to care, health outcomes, and disparities.

  4. Inclusive language and communication: Health care professionals will learn how to use inclusive language and communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds. The course will address topics such as gender pronouns, microaggressions, and active listening.

  5. Allyship: Health care professionals will learn how to become allies for marginalized groups and advocate for their patients' rights. The course will cover strategies for promoting equity and social justice in health care.

You will finish the course with practical tools and strategies to promote conscious inclusion in you practice and create a more equitable health care system. As part of your training you will  also develop an action plan for your clinic or practice to ensure you take your learning forward and remain aware of and challenge unhelpful behaviours and biases in the clinical environment. This will help you to be 'actively inclusive' moving forward.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:
