Course content

2 sections9 lectures1h 13m total length
  • That Good Ol' OSI Model6:47

The OSI Model is to Networking what "Hello World" is to coding.  You just gotta know it.  Come along with me as we kick off the course with the first three OSI layers and I help you understand why we have them!  Let's go baby!

  • Those Other Layers!9:22

Come join me on completing our high-level journey through the OSI model.  In this lecture we'll wrap up the model and prepare ourselves for the TCP/IP model (which is the model we should actually be excited about!).  Let's go baby!

  • TCP/IP is King6:23

Yes! Now it's time to see why NO ONE actually uses the OSI Reference Model in production!  Wait, why? Watch and learn baby!  It's going to be insightful hehe.

  • All That Application Layer Stuff9:58

BAM! You want to see the data hitting the wire? I'll show you the data hitting the wire!  In this lecture we're going to crack open the dynamic duo of network analysis tools: Wireshark and Brim!  It's going be awesome because you're going to see the layers... in ACTION!  Let's go!

  • All That Transport Layer Stuff9:21

The transport layer is responsible for moving data off the local machine to another machine.  In this lecture we'll dive into UDP and TCP segments and understand why we have these two protocols are so popular and when the software developers might decide to use one over the other.

  • All That Network Layer Stuff6:22

IP addresses live here!  It's time to dive into the packets.  Let's go!

  • All That Data Link Layer Stuff9:02

Yes! Layer 2! It's all about MAC addresses baby.  In this lecture you'll learn what they are and how network communication happens at the last layer before they become data bits!

  • Explaining Everything!16:26

And now for my next act... lol - in this lecture you're going to learn the entire end-to-end process of network communication as it maps to the OSI model and TCP/IP protocol stacks.  This is probably the single most useful lecture in the course because it is so foundational to networking! My goal is to have you explaining it like I do in this lesson.  You ready for this baby!? Let's go!

Requirements

  • Computer and Internet Connection
  • Basic awareness of computer networks (and I mean BASIC! we will cover everything you need to know in the course)

It's time baby - it is time!

So imagine this scenario:

You walk into a server room surrounded by whirring fans, blinking lights and enough CAT6 cable to wrap the earth twice.  As you approach a rack humming with Dell blade servers your body involuntarily quickly shivers as you feel the chill keeping your servers alive and happy.

Your boss called you into the data center to investigate why the CEO keeps experiencing intermittent network connectivity.  You've already logged into the Cisco switch and identify which physical switchport maps back to his palatial office.   But something isn't right.

After inspecting the port you notice the status light is blinking amber not green.

"Hmm" you muse to yourself.

You subconsciously place your thumb on your cheek and use your index finger to brush your lips.

"Wait! I know!"

You quickly run back to your office, slide across the room in your swivel chair and bump up against your desk almost knocking over your 20oz bottle of spring water.

Your heart is racing and you can feel your palms starting to sweat.  Why?  Because the answer just occured to you.  Perhaps the CEO's port was shutdown because of a port security violation.  You remember she brought in her home router and plugged it into her network jack over the weekend.  But the switch is configured to only permit access to the first connecting MAC address.  You quickly SSH into the switch, check the port security violations and confirm your theory!

"Yes! Yes! Yes!"

It's like you just won a race.  You can't wait to brief your boss after lunch.  You love your job.  Work is enjoyable and you FINALLY know what you're talking about in meetings.

No more B.S. - kiss that crap goodbye.  It's time to not only pass the Network+ exam but OWN it and take control of your future.

This is the course for you.  I've taken a different approach to teaching this content.  And approach that is a little risky but I know it works.  I have almost 20 years of real world experience with computer networking so I'm not just going to teach you the book knowledge I'm going to give you the inside scoop on the tricks, secrets and experience tips you'll need to succeed as a competent networking engineer!

Are you ready for this!?

Of course you are! Join and jump in.  Lesson one is waiting. :)
