Course content

11 sections • 59 lectures • 3h 4m total length
  • Introduction2:21
Meet your instructor and see what PivotTables in Excel for the web can do: turn thousands of rows into totals, averages and counts, and build interactive dashboards in the browser.
  • About the Course1:23
How to get the best from the course: setting the video quality to full HD, changing the playback speed to suit you, and where to go for Udemy support and your certificate.
  • About the optional conversations with Ada0:29

What the two optional conversations with Ada are: one at the start about the data you work with and your goals, and one at the end to review the course.

  • (Optional) Chat with Ada about the course and what you want to learn
  • Download the Training Data0:03
Download the sales data workbook used throughout the course so you can build every PivotTable in Excel for the web alongside the lectures.
  • Review of the Data2:26
Structure your data so PivotTables work properly: one header row, no blank rows or columns and no totals inside the data, using the course training file.

Requirements

  • A Microsoft 365 account - personal, family or work - with access to Excel for the web. Everything in this course is done in the browser: no desktop Excel, nothing to install, and no difference between Windows and Mac.
  • Basic Excel. You should be comfortable opening a workbook and recognizing a table of data with headings. No formulas, VBA or macros are needed at any point.
  • The final section connects an Excel workbook to Power BI data. This section is optional and nothing else depends on it. It requires a separate Power BI license and a work or school account - Power BI does not accept personal Gmail or Outlook addresses.
  • No Microsoft 365 Copilot license is required. Everything in this course is built with standard Excel features.

Description

This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.

Every lesson in this course is written, created and recorded by me. AI is used only to help produce supporting images and written materials around the lessons.

Your manager wants the numbers by Friday, and all you have is a spreadsheet with twelve thousand rows in it.

You do not need to install anything, and you do not need to write a single formula. If you can open Excel in a browser, you can answer that question in a couple of minutes with a PivotTable - and this course shows you how, start to finish, in three hours.

This is Excel for the web: the version that runs in your browser and comes with any Microsoft 365 account. Everything taught here works there. No desktop install, no version numbers, no "that feature is not available in your edition".

WHAT YOU WILL ACTUALLY DO

You start with a raw sales file and finish with two working dashboards. Along the way you will:

  • Create PivotTables and reshape them by dragging fields, not by rewriting formulas

  • Summarize with Sum, Average, Count, Min and Max, and combine them in a single table

  • Filter with report filters, Top 10 analysis, and slicers that drive several tables at once

  • Group dates to see trends by month, quarter and year

  • Calculate percentages, running totals, difference from and rank, straight from the Show Values As menu

  • Apply conditional formatting, data bars, color scales and icon sets so the answer is visible at a glance

  • Build a sales dashboard and a finance dashboard end to end

HOW IT IS TAUGHT

Short lessons, mostly four to nine minutes, every one recorded live in the browser so what you see is what you will open. Every topic section ends with a practical activity: a written brief, the data file, and a full walkthrough video so you can check your work. Six activities across the course. The training data is downloadable in the first section, so you are working with real numbers from lesson one.

ABOUT THE TRAINER

I am Ian Littlejohn. I have been training business people to work with data since 2008, and publishing on Udemy since 2013, where more than 400,000 learners have taken my 16 courses and left more than 139,000 reviews at an average rating of 4.6. I teach the analysis, not the software. Every lesson starts with a question a manager actually asks, then answers it with tools you already have.

Ready to start? Open a browser, open your data, and let's build your first PivotTable.

Who this course is for:

  • People who work in Excel through a browser - on a Chromebook, a locked-down work laptop, or a shared machine where you cannot install software - and need to summarize data without writing formulas
  • Excel users on Microsoft 365 who have only ever used the desktop app, and want to know what does and does not work in the web version
  • Finance, sales and operations staff who are asked for a monthly summary or a dashboard, and are currently building it by hand with SUMIF and filters
  • If you want the full PivotTables course in desktop Excel, with pivot charts and a longer curriculum, take Complete Introduction to Excel Pivot Tables instead. This course is the shorter, browser-only version.
