A keyframe in animation and filmmaking is a drawing or shot that defines the starting and ending points of any smooth transition. These are called frames because their position in time is measured in frames on a strip of film or on a digital video editing timeline.

Add keyframes

You can add keyframes in the Timeline or the Effect Controls panel at the current time. Use the Toggle Animation button in the Effect Controls panel to activate the keyframing process.

1. In a Timeline panel, select the clip that contains the effect you want to animate.

What Is Text Used For?

You can use Premiere Pro to add text in at least 5 ways. But there are infinitely more creative ways to use your text on the screen and engage your audience.

1. Title Sequences: Show viewers what film they are going to see in a creative way.

2. Opening Credits: Introduce the film and some of its creative team.

3. Closing Credits: Ensure the cast and crew have received their due credit.

4. Time & Place: Help viewers follow along in the story by introducing cities and timestamps.

5. Dialogue: Highlight dialogue that can be challenging to show on screen (such as a text messaging sequence).

How to Add Text in Premiere Pro

Adding text is relatively simple to do. Everything from colour, size, font and animation can be done right inside the program to ensure your Premiere project is how you want it.

Step 1: Select the Type Tool (T)

You can add text to a video clip from either the Essential Graphics panel, by using the Type Tool or by hitting Ctrl+T or Cmd+T at the same time, which will open a new text box. However, if you want to customize the text, being in the Essential Graphics panel will be the easiest.

Step 2: Add a Text Box

To add text using the type tool, you’ll want to navigate to the toolbar and if you don’t see it go to Windows > Tools, simply click and hold down the Type Tool for a moment and the Type Tool and Vertical Type Tool options will show.

Once you’ve selected the Type Tool, you have the option to simply click anywhere in your program panel (on the viewer) and start typing.

You can also create a larger text box by clicking in your viewer and dragging it with the Type Tool. The difference being that creating an actual text box confines your text within the space of the box, which is great if you’re going to be adding a lot of text.

Step 3: Customize the Text Shape, Size, and Color

To customize your text for things like shape, size, and color, you need to be in the Essential Graphics panel, where you can view all the options for your text. To work with a certain piece of text, you have to have that specific layer of text highlighted before you can change anything. From here you can modify the text as you see fit within your project.

Step 4: Consider Adding a Custom Font

Adobe Premiere Pro has a set amount of font styles already loaded in the program, but it is entirely possible that you might want to use another font in your project.

If that is the case, you can add additional fonts by going to the Add Adobe Fonts option (formerly Typekit) at the top right-hand corner of the drop-down font menu.

This will open a new tab in your browser and bring up Adobe Fonts, the main fonts database. Once you’re in Adobe Fonts, simply pick the desired font and activate it. The activated fonts will show up in the font options inside Adobe Premiere.

Tip: You can also navigate to Graphics > Add Fonts from Adobe Fonts.

ADD TRANSITION

What are transition effects?

Transition effects blend the contents between two sequence clips over time, to smooth out an edit or add visual interest.

Transition effects use the unused parts at the start or end of a clip, called handles, to overlap the content for the duration of the effect.

If more than one clip is selected in the Timeline, or if you lasso multiple edits while holding down Command (macOS) or Control (Windows), you can apply the default transition to every selected edit.

Choose a transition effect

• Browse for transition effects in the Effects panel.

• Use the Search box in the Effects panel.

Apply a transition effect

You can apply a transition effect to the beginning of a clip, to the end of a clip, or between two clips.

• Drag a transition effect onto the end of a clip in a sequence or between two clips.

Right-click to apply the default transition

• Right-click the end of a clip in a sequence or a selected edit, and choose Apply Default Transitions.

Use a keyboard shortcut

Set the default transition effect

• In the Effects panel, right-click a transition effect and choose Set Selected As Default Transition.

Remove a transition effect

Set up a Color workspace

Premiere Pro provides a preset Color workspace that makes your task of color grading quicker and more efficient.

Select Window > Workspace > Color, or choose Color from the workspace switcher. The Color workspace opens a Lumetri Color panel to the right and a Lumetri Scopes panel to the left of the Program Monitor.

General color correction workflow

1. Ensure that you have set up the Color workspace

When it comes to post-production, never skimp on sound.

The sound on your productions is one simple thing that can easily make a project seem really polished and expensive, or cheap and poorly produced. Even if you're not an audio expert, there are some basic tools available in Adobe Premiere Pro that can help you perfect your sound in post.

Surround Reverb

As the video points out, Surround Reverb is a great tool for blending effects and music, so any sound you're adding in the post matches the ambience of the scene.

If, for example, you want to have two characters listen to music in a scene, and you're adding the music in the post, you don't want that music to sound as if it's just laid over the video.

By using the tool called Surround Reverb, you can choose how you'd like that music to sound. Options include settings for locations like "deep well," "theatre," or "small room."

Mastering

If you want to easily adjust the audio for a clip, SonduckFilm says the Mastering tool is the one for you.

The Mastering tool gives you an option for output gain. Output gain refers to a volume level before processing. Basically, it's a tool that can be used to increase or decrease the ceiling of your sound. So if you have a loud clip you don't want going over -6dB, set output gain to -6dB, and that will put a limiter on your sound.

If you want the freedom to make your clips louder, like in this tutorial video, push the output gain all the way to 15dB. Then you can adjust the volume of your clip on the clip itself.

Reminder! You don't want your audio to be too loud. Watch your levels and make sure they aren't too far into the orange or red.
