Congratulations! You have completed the Colored Pencil for the Curious Beginner course! In this video we will recap what you've learned!
This class is a step-by-step introduction to colored pencil drawing, perfect for absolute beginners who want to explore realistic art with traditional materials. Our subject is a small tealight candle on a dark wood surface—an ideal project for learning how to capture light, shadow, and texture.
We’ll start from blank paper and work all the way to a finished drawing together. Along the way, you’ll learn how to:
• Accurately measure and draw from a photo reference
• Layer colored pencils effectively to build depth and richness
• Use shading, blending, and the color wheel to create natural transitions
• Match colors for realism, from the bright white flame to deep black shadows
• Render textures such as the waxy candle, rigid wick, glowing flame, and hardwood surface
Because colored pencil relies so much on layering, this project gives you lots of practice with gradual buildup to achieve luminosity and contrast. The strong range of values—from the glowing flame to the dark tabletop—will strengthen your eye for light and shadow while training your hand to handle pencils with control and subtlety.
By the end of this class, you’ll have not only a realistic drawing of a beautifully glowing lit candle, but also a solid foundation in colored pencil techniques and confidence in your ability to approach future projects. No prior drawing or colored pencil experience is required—just curiosity, patience, and a willingness to learn.
