Learn about the terms:
-> Strategies & Techniques in education
-> Different types of learners in the classroom
* Auditory learners - they learn and absorb information by seeing things around
* Visual learners - they learn and absorb information by listening to various kind of sounds
* Kinaesthetic learners - they absorb information by moving around. This type of learning happens when children are doing hands-on activities in the classroom.
Setting up learning stations in the classroom is one of the most important strategy used in differentiated teaching. Creating these stations entirely depends on the educator.
She/he can either make 4-5 stations for the same subject, let's say
Literacy station - for Concept Noun
or
Stations can be made for different subjects like
Numeracy - Addition, Subtraction etc.
Literacy - Sequence Story Reading/ Writing
Unit of Inquiry- Modes of Communication
Painting - Marble painting
Tech-friendly Workstation - Story Reading, getting familiar with computer keys etc.
Students move to these stations for a particular task assigned by the educator. They finish a task and move to the next learning station. Clear instructions are given to everyone in the class before children move to these stations. There is also a time limit for each task and when to move to the other station.
Students can revisit these stations so that the concepts are more clear to them by doing hands-on activities & playing games.
Learn about the main components of classroom management
Earlier video shows one child plays the whole game.
In this video, the educator makes the groups and children move to table 1 & 2
* Group 1 - Table 1 - 2 Children
* Group 2 - Table 2 -1 Children
I made two groups since I had children of different age.
However if the class has about 20 children, the educator can make 4/5 groups
She will give step by step instructions before the students move to the learning stations
She will show the Toss in the Circle board and talk about the coloured circles.
Get an understanding of arranging resources for setting up a Learning Station , "Literacy Station"
Game based learning teaches concepts to children in an interesting way.
Here I have used Hopscotch game for children to think & write new words. Children love to throw the dice & see where it lands on the game. So this becomes a fun & engaging game for learning more words. Children develop writing & thinking skills.
Learning Station- Numeracy
The educator sets up a learning station for children of Grade 1 & up. She draws the Toss in the Circle game on a board. Four different coloured circles are drawn so that it's easier for the children to find out where the counters/blocks/beads/seeds etc. land on the game board.
The educator will give step by step instructions to the whole class and explains :
-> the whole game to the children
-> "What are Tally Marks" and "How to write the tally marks on a worksheet"
-> "What is a Bar Graph" and "How to draw a bar graph"
With this game, children learn a new concept, "Counting & keeping scores using tally marks" and after that draw a graph for blocks/counters/beads etc. landed on four coloured circles-
White, Green, Yellow & Red which means
-> How many counters/coins/blocks/dice landed on the White coloured circle ?
-> How many counters/coins/blocks/dice landed on the Green coloured circle ?
-> How many counters/coins/blocks/dice landed on the Yellow coloured circle ?
-> How many counters/coins/blocks/dice landed on the Red coloured circle ?
-> How many counters/coins/blocks/dice landed on the border of two circles ?
So there will be two axis in the Graph :
X Axis - White / Green / Yellow / Red Circles
Y Axis - Number of Counters landed on any of the circles
Children will use the tally marks worksheet to draw a bar graph from the collected data.
Playing the Tossing in the Circle Game & keeping the total count,
concept - counting is taught in the class. This way learning becomes engaging & more interesting for the children.
Children learn to draw a bar graph on the basis of the count from the tally marks worksheet.
in this video, the educator will learn
-> Setting up the learning station- Numeracy
-> Giving clear instructions to the child
-> Praising the child for excellent, good work & trying well
-> Giving rewards after finishing a task
Observe how the educator and the students do a word formation activity using Hopscotch game.
Following strategies have been shown in this video:
-> Grouping Strategy - 3 children in group-1 in this demo
or make 2 groups (2 children in each group)
-> Clapping Sequence - increases concentration of the students for an activity / task
-> Giving Rewards - Motivational Strategy
-> Praising Children - Appreciation Strategy
What are the differences when we talk about these two terms:
-> Classroom Management Strategies
-> Classroom Teaching Strategies
I have demonstrated teaching & management strategies in this quiz.
Teaching Strategy :
-> playing a quiz
-> making groups ( in circle time)
Management Strategies include:
-> Sitting in groups
-> Praising children
-> Raising hands
-> Clapping Sequence ( 3-2-1)
-> Hands on the table
-> Giving Rewards
Learning outcome from this task is getting familiar with traffic lights & learn about
-> Purpose of different colours in traffic lights
-> Recycling
-> Use of different colours of dustbins
-> keeping surroundings clean
-> taking care of the resources (school, classroom & playground, home etc)
As we know all teachers are very creative, we can plan so many activities which shows integration of different subjects - Numeracy, Literacy, Unit Of Inquiry, Physical Education, Music & Dance, Yoga etc.
It is very much understandable, planning such activities require lot of effort, time and resources, but you will be happy to see the learning outcome.
Teaching Strategies - Narrating the story in your own words & hands-on activities
Management Strategies like volume level, class discipline, raising hands etc
In this demo I am narrating a story to the children and demonstrating how to make the story narration more engaging & interesting for the children.
Management strategies like
-> making the session interactive
-> structuring the whole session
-> varying the tone & pace
have been demonstrated in this video
The educator narrates a story, " The very hungry caterpillar" and talks about the
lesson learned from the story - "Eating healthy food to stay happy in life"
Get creative and learn to make different resources for your class
-> Bead Stringing - Motivational / Appreciation Strategy
-> Spin the wheel - Making groups & choosing an activity in a fun way
-> Timeline Flash cards - Setting a time line
-> Traffic lights - Group Activity, develops Time Management, Communication & thinking skills
-> Feeling Face Stickers - Motivational & Behaviour Management Strategy
-> Put hand on head/ lap/ table Stick holders - Get children Attention
-> Student Led Conference - Develops communication skills & student's confidence
-> Sand timer - Time Management
Learn about some classroom management strategies and their importance
Bingo Game helps in class management by giving a playful way of introducing a concept to the children. Students have fun time with their friends and at the same time learn many concepts in Physical Education, Art, Music, Numeracy, Language, and Science.
In this video, children are learning concepts- Nouns, Verbs, Picture Reading, Word Recognition etc.
At the same time, they are working on their listening and creative skills & learning time management.
Collaborative learning is one of the strategy used in teaching many concepts. This is a type of peer learning in which students sit in pair or groups of 4 or 6 and do hands-on activities in the respective learning stations. Here the set up is for Numeracy learning station.
This strategy helps in enhancing learning using teaching resources, worksheets, creative games etc.
Learning becomes interesting and easier for the children.
Setting up learning stations is one of the most effective classroom management strategy.
Here the concept -Nouns, Verbs, Adjective, Picture Reading, Sequence Reading etc. have been shown.
Students learn to work in a groups and share their learning with each other. Skills like time management are developed when they learn to finish the assigned task in a given duration.
Learn about action verbs in a playful way
Creating workstations is one of the most important class management strategy.
Students can work individually or in group to complete a given task.
Learn about some classroom management techniques with examples.
Teachers are storytellers and think about interesting, creative ways of relating a concept to a story.
Using Storytelling as a Classroom Management technique & strategy allows to promote a sense of community and belonging. Storytelling is one of the most creative way of engaging with your students.
It is one of the technique that helps children visualise themselves in many situations with the storyteller. for example, Here I am narrating a story- "The Journey from a seed to a plant"
Steps of how a plant grows, from a seed to a plant have been shown using colourful resources like seeds, soil, pots, labels, tree, hand puppets etc.
Classroom management can be defined as the actions teachers take to establish and sustain an environment that fosters students' academic achievement as well as their social, emotional, and moral growth. In other words, the goal of classroom management is not order for order's sake, but order for the sake of learning.
It also refers to the variety of skills and techniques that teachers use to keep students organised, focussed, orderly, attentive to task and academically productive during a class.
All teachers are unique with different teaching styles. Hence, it requires a different strategy to handle inappropriate behaviour to achieve goals. Class strategies always helps you, to be prepared for challenging situations and to handle the class effectively. Teacher who follow these techniques are likely to get better results.
Following are some Classroom Management techniques & strategies which can help in managing your classrooms:
1. Consider your teaching style and preferences
2. Build excitement for the course content and keep it simple
3. Keep to the schedule you set
4. Understand your students and get to know each student individually
5. Encourage initiative and praise whenever possible
6. Engage more with your class
6. Give feedback to the students and the parents
7. Include more classroom management resources
8. Incorporate positive reinforcement
9. Set effective limits
10. Practice patience with rational detachment ( ability to manage your own behaviour and attitude )
