The orchid is one of the most important subjects in Chinese painting, it belongs to the set of classic subjects called the four Gentlemen.

, the blossoming plum, the bamboo and the chrysanthemum .


the four plants were depicted by literati in different dynasties. The orchid with a faint, delicate fragrance grew in hidden and secluded places. Thus, the orchid can embody the characteristics of self-containment, reservation, simplicity, solitude and unpretentiousness.


Traditional Chinese painting shows two types of orchid, you will learn how to paint these two types of orchids in the boneless style. we will learn how to make the leaves with curved and twisted brushstrokes. How to make the petals with a single stroke.


In our daily life we also have other famous orchids surround us, like phalaenopsis and cattleya. it’s pleasure to have them in our paintings, in the next two section of the lecture you will learn how to paint the leaves and flower of them.
