Master the blockade motif by forcing moves that trap the enemy king in a crowded position, as shown with queen and knight checks leading to a smothered mate or checkmate.
Explore the blockade motif in the geometry of chess, analyzing the winning move queen to f7 that blocks the square on f7 and frees the knight to e6 for mate.
Explore blockade puzzles and learn how a knight capture leads to a decisive rook and queen fork with Ra7, followed by material gain; practice quizzes reinforce this tactical motif.
Shows how to open a file or diagonal to develop a bishop and create tactical chances, including sacrifices to pin the queen and win material along the a1–h8 diagonal.
Explore opening a file or diagonal as a tactical motif, with rook to f5 leading to mate, and opening the h1–a8 diagonal for the bishop to join the attack.
An in-depth look at Karpov vs Taimanov (1977) examining the opening file and diagonal motifs, and a spectacular rook to a1 tactic that reshapes the midgame.
This puzzle teaches clearing space by identifying what blocks the attack, evaluating four candidate moves, and pursuing a winning line through opened files and diagonals.
Botvinnik versus Stepanov (1930) showcases the clearing-space motif, where a bold sequence clears space, traps the queen, and secures a decisive tactical advantage.
The video explains the damning tactic in chess, showing white's winning sequence from a queen sacrifice and bishop to e7 that damns the open e-file, leading to a mating finish.
Explore the damning motif through a winning sequence starting with bishop to e5, showing how pattern recognition and practice unlock geometrical tactical maneuvers and prevent simple attacks.
Explore how x-raying shapes tactical chess in a blitz game between Victor Neill and Arseny Cargan, including bishop takes on g7 and three king-move responses.
Delve into the x-raying motif in grandmaster chess by examining the Chigorin vs Znosko-Borovsky game, showing how a king's gambit opens tactical exchanges and reveals winning chances.
This course covers geometrical chess motifs such as Blockade, Opening of a file (rank, diagonal), Clearing the space, Damming and X-Ray Attack.
This course really helps to see the whole board and to learn how to make your pieces interact even if they are located on different sides of the board!
We will demonstrate not only the concept of these tactical chess manoeuvres but also the logic behind finding these moves in your own chess games.
This course is broken down into 5 sections (one for each motif). In each section you will find 3-4 tutorials analysing different chess puzzles (the difficulty of the positions analysed in these puzzles increases as you go along).
Also each section contains an analysis of a game played between two chess grandmasters to demonstrate how effective these tactical manoeuvres can be and finally we prepared quizzes for you to practice and the end of each section.
We look forward to seeing you in class!
Sincerely,
Mark and Viktor
