An introduction to the course, outlining the beginner-friendly character design method, structure, and goals.
Learn the philosophy behind the course’s study method, exploring how ‘explorative copying’ builds your visual library and makes character design fun and effective.
Download the essential resources you’ll need to follow along with the course.
Discover the full 3-step study method—choosing references, deconstructing them into simple shapes, and creating multiple variations to build your visual library.
Learn how to tackle complex characters using the ‘layering’ technique, breaking designs into manageable stages for easier studies and creative variations.
Discover the ‘focusing’ technique—isolating and studying tricky parts like heads, hands, or props—to make complex characters easier to tackle.
Learn how to transform real-life references into cartoons using three key principles—exaggeration, clarity, and simplicity—for more creative and readable designs.
Apply the explorative study method to real-life photos and learn how to simplify, trace, and adapt them into full cartoon characters.
Learn to use simple gesture lines as the foundation for dynamic poses, applying concepts like line of action, contraposto, exaggeration, and balance to quickly create and iterate cartoon characters.
Learn to think and draw in 3D by wrapping surface lines around spheres, cylinders, organic shapes, and references to develop a solid sense of form and volume for drawing from imagination.
Master cartoon heads using the Loomis method to build accurate structures, place features, and study expressions through deconstruction, exploration, and stylized variations.
Learn to construct cartoon bodies using a 3D mannequin system, adapting proportions and poses, and practice tracing, designing, and posing dynamic characters.
This lesson shows what the rest of the course has been building up to: creating full cartoon characters using a 4-step process—design the mannequin, dress it and add a face, pose the mannequin, and adapt the clothes and features to the final pose.

Hey there! This is Martin!.
I created this course to share a method I call Explorative Studies, a system I developed to make learning character design more structured—and, most importantly, fun, engaging, and creatively fulfilling. When I first started studying characters, it was easy to feel lost or stuck copying without understanding. This system helps you approach characters step by step, turning study into a creative and engaging process for anyone.
Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to break down heads, bodies, poses, and expressions while keeping everything systematic. You’ll explore characters from cartoons and other artists, discovering how shapes, proportions, and features come together. The method encourages experimentation, variations, and playful exploration, so you’re not just copying—you’re learning how to think like a character designer effectively.
By following these exercises, you’ll develop a practical toolkit that makes studying and creating characters more approachable, even as a beginner. You’ll start to recognize patterns, understand construction, and gain confidence to design your own unique characters from scratch.
Whether you want to study existing styles, create your own, or simply enjoy the process of drawing characters, this course gives you a clear framework to make it both effective and enjoyable throughout your ongoing practice.
