Learn a step-by-step pro workflow to create human character designs from an empty page to a developed concept. Master shape, language, proportions, sketching, thumbnailing, value and color for beginners.
Explore a two-part approach to character design: anatomy, shape language, and warm-ups, then concept development via mind maps, thumbnailing, and sketching, with pro tips to build confidence.
Learn to draw the human body by breaking it into six parts—head, chest, pelvis, shoulders, arms, and legs—using big-to-small proportions and shape language to see the bigger picture.
Explore how proportions convey gender, age, and personality by comparing base proportions, males 7–8 heads tall, females 6–7, children ~4, and practice warm-up sketches with simple shapes to express character.
Use shape language to design human characters by combining circles, triangles, and squares to express personality. Exaggerate and contrast six body parts in sketches to create memorable concepts.
Define who your character is by answering core questions on role, motivation, and archetype. Use a mind map and a brief to explore stereotypes like profession, gender, and age.
Research characters by building mood boards on Pinterest, gathering inspiration, moods, and colors to ground fantasy designs in reality while outlining tattoos and seagull motifs.
Explore multiple ideas through character thumbnails, silhouettes, and quick sketches, then combine parts to build a stable base composition using geometric shapes in thumbnailing.
Combine your thumbnails to refine the character’s shapes and build silhouette, then add props and test symmetry by flipping horizon to prepare a clean sketch for values and color.
Explore color and values to guide the eye with strong contrast through thumbnailing, mood boards, and color palettes, using layered value checks to test options before painting.
Organize layers, use the Art Motors brush set to shape skin, hat, and features, then apply shading with alpha lock and blending modes for a cohesive final artwork.
Paint the clothes for a character by shading the shirt, adding stripes and textures, and building shadows with clipping masks to finish the outfit.
Explore painting accessories for character design by building a white seagull, beak, locket, pipe, and decorative elements with layers, alpha lock, clipping mask, shading, and mist effects.
Design the character with a simple, complementary background, adjust the composition and layers to make the figure pop, and tailor visuals for banners, thumbnails, and stickers.
Explore six body parts, geometric shapes, and shape language to express personality, create a character concept, and complete an illustration ready for the project gallery.
