What you'll learn
  • draw basic constructions before jumping into designing and drawing your characters
  • understand the difference between classical construction and stylized construction
  • use reference material for inspiration and ideas
  • Combining different concepts to create original characters
  • you dont need any specific materials, you can do these on paper, however, photoshop is recommended as some of the techniques I do need to be done on a digital art program
  • The program itself isnt important though, as the techniques and concepts are the focus of what I am teaching.

In this course I want to share my process of designing and drawing cartoony characters in both stylized and classical styles. I have been working in animation for almost 8 years now, and have experience in both 2D and 3D animation.

I will take you through the very basic constructions and initial stages of drawing the cartoon figure, and break it down so that you can try these techniques to any character you want to draw yourself.

I will then show you how to implement these basic techniques to draw characters based off reference and start designing your own creations.

Who this course is for:
  • anyone with basic drawing skills who wants to improve their cartoony drawing
  • animation students
  • comic artists
  • illustrators
  • hobbyists

Here we take a look at some of the principles involved in designing and drawing classicaly cartoony characters

then we draw a character from scratch and design him based on the generic main/cute character proportions or classical WB and Disney

Then we tie the whole drawing down and add in some detail

I have included both the PSD photoshop file and a normal JPG of the drawing

Construction for classical cartoony characters

In this video I explain some of the methods which I use to draw retro/cutout style characters, and some of the "rules" to help achieve that look.

We then redraw the character we drew in the previous lecture from the classical style, but in a more retro look

First we start with the rough under drawing, then we tie it down and rework some of the shapes

I have included the photoshop file and there is a normal jpg as well of the character

+ Designing Characters

Taking a look at some ways of using reference images for inspiration

using skeletal images

how to look at images and what to look for design wise

Using Reference for inspiration

Quick brainstorming sketches to try different ideas

dont be afraid to throw away what youve done and start over

keep redesigning until youre happy with what you have

In this video I am taking you through my own discovery and I hope you find the search helpful in how to look at your own drawings

Quick Sketches

Combining two different ideas to come up with something original

Using the Rock Star look as my combination

drawing the construction now first to help as a structure to add details on to later

Again, I try to draw in a different style when I go to tying down to experiment with the look

Combining Ideas

Here I take away the images I was looking at, and start to redraw the character again

I allow myself design freedom and change things as I go along

Freehand drawing and completing the design

Send your sketch assignment to BaderBadruddin@Gmail.com and I will draw on your drawing with my notes and give some feedback.

One submission per student please :)

Looking forward to seeing your work!
