This Carnatic Music Course is designed for beginners who are interested in learning the basics of Carnatic music, including its theory, structure, and performance techniques. In the context of "world music," Carnatic music is recognized for its sophisticated framework, which has influenced music globally, while also maintaining its unique traditional integrity. Through this course, students will gain a solid foundation in vocal Carnatic music, with an introduction to ragas, talas, basic compositions, and essential practice exercises. It is divided into the following lessons:

  • Understand the Basics of Carnatic Music: Gain an understanding of the importance of ragas, talas, and compositions.

  • Perform Basic Vocal Exercises: Practice essential exercises such as sarali varisai, janti varisai, and alankarams.

  • Learn Simple Ragas: Be able to identify and sing simple ragas, with a focus on their Arohana (ascending scale) and Avarohana (descending scale).

  • Understand and Practice Talas: Learn and practice basic talas like Adi Tala and Rupaka Tala with proper rhythm and timing.

  • Learn Simple Compositions: Sing beginner-level compositions like Kritis and Bhajans, set to basic ragas and talas.

  • Perform devotional songs:  Sing different language songs.

  • Perform Classical songs: Learn classical songs from ganamruthabodhini.

  • Develop a Strong Sense of Pitch and Rhythm: Improve pitch accuracy, rhythm, and timing through regular practice.
