In this lecture we review Career Readiness. How to prepare you for the opportunity you want and/or industry that will get you there. If you are lost and confused this is a great module.
Why is Wysocki even doing this? He clearly explains what happened when he didn't prepare. It's not awful, it's just boring.
Being in tech sales, one has to look for gigs every few years so most sales reps know how to get gigs and that's what is talked about.
Then it's asked "Do you want to be Good or Great?" How can these steps help you to make it to great? How to prepare to get/find the gig you want and also the people in that field.
How does your LinkedIn profile look? Suggestions how to beef it up!
What does your resume look like for second interview? Would you like an amazing one? It's shown how to get that done.
Do you know the 5 Professional Skills? Have you taken a public speaking class? Can you work with team members that are not your friends?
So, you want to be an "X?" Have you shadowed for that gig? How do you know you want it? Have you been to industry trade shows?
Have you ever been published? That will make you stick out big time!
When you meet with someone do you research them? And, when you meet, do you listen?
Would you like to know books to read and videos to view about career readiness?
Have you heard or read about the award winning, best selling book, Careers By the People?
How to connect with Wysocki for speaking engagements or one-on-one consulting.
Please watch all modules as each one should help you get closer to the occupation you desire.
All these ideas and suggestions assisted Wysocki in making it through 30+ years selling technology in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Hawaii.

The resume booklet is a tool that was invented in Los Angeles by sales reps in the technology industry. We had to find gigs every 2-4 years. In tech sales the gigs are short do to many reasons so a tool like the resume booklet helped.
The resume is page 1 then you go into 30-60-90 Plans, marketing events or activities you did during your stints at X, Y or Z corp. Then the list or of your references. Since it's the same industry the hiring manager may know or what to know the reference so it's usually an offer.
LinkedIn should be viewed as your living resume. It has to be done to the best of your ability. That is explained in the first lecture. After that is done and done well, use the tool to research industries. In the video Wysocki explains how to use filters.
Using filters on LinkedIn helps you narrow down industries, careers, locations. You want to be an accountant in Tulsa? You can find firms and people in that area to reach out to.
LinkedIn is a powerful tool and you need to use it that way. This is the business worlds Instagram as well as other popular social media that that world uses.
Whatever industry you want to get into they will have trade shows and organizations. So, when you go, all you need is a nice portfolio folder with resumes, business cards and an awesome attitude. Attend a local trade show and walk the aisles. Be hydrated and well fed. It's going to be a long day but it pays off big time.....this is true networking!
You can't have your info lost and always ask for their card too. You will have to follow up with a nice email. Listen as much as possible and after take notes so you remember.
*You can also make a cool business card that has all your information on it linking to your LinkedIn. You have to have cards for anyone older than 50 that is at the show.....going old school will help.
Good luck!
Amazing! After all your hard work, focus and maybe a bit of luck you meet a person in the industry or occupation you desire. What happens next?
This could go many ways so let's hoping it works out. Let's hope both of you have time to talk and in person! Focus on the occupation do not bring up nonsense like politics or sports stay focused on the goal. You want to learn about what the career entails. What the person can inform you about so you can learn this profession. Never interrupt. Stay focused and listen.
The video gives good ideas as well as Wysocki's Talking Points in his book, Careers By the People.
From all this information you have learned in these 5 lectures/modules you should have a better grasp of how to find a career and occupation that you desire.
Wysocki will keep making videos and if you have ideas, toss that at him. Why not? There's always angles and ways to move the ball forward.
Your career will be 40 years, do you want to enjoy it?

The emphasis is not like “Designing Your Life” it’s about focusing on your profession. It’s 40 years of your existence and per Frank Parsons, other than choosing a spouse, it is the most important choice in your life. Frank is the Godfather of Choosing a Vocation. Frank was Career Readiness.
Everyone is looking for or wants a dream career, dream job, best job, a solid profession so they scour career guides, career books, career planning, take career assessments etc……which is all good. Wysocki likes the approach of narrowing it down to a few occupations and fields. If you don’t like hospitals, don’t go into medical, if you love numbers maybe accounting, actuarial science etc… maybe your gig. Focus on a list of likes and dislikes.
Even if you are looking for alternatives to college, talk to people in the field that you want as well as the ones that have left the field and why. Don’t always associate money with success and joy. If all you want is money, that’s easy. Get an MBA from Wharton and work as an investment banker. They make a few million a year, so that is done. Congrats! Move to Beverly Hills! If you want some joy or a challenge for your career, you must find what interests you and that you enjoy learning about constantly.
Careers By the People informs how Wysocki should have prepared for a career. You will learn about networking, soft, professional skills from 30+ years in the trenches of technology sales.
Here's some questions Wysocki gets about the book Careers By the People.
Is Careers By the People useful for Career and Technical Education?
It’s a great book for CTE aka Careers & Technical Education as it views 101 occupations that break down into California CTE Career Pathways. In the book there are (4) in Agriculture and Natural Resources (7) Arts, Media, & Entertainment (1) Building & Construction Trades (14) Business & Finance (18) Education, Child Development, & Family Services (1) Energy, Environment, & Utilities (5) Engineering & Architecture (3) Fashion & Interior Design (10) Health Science & Medical Technology (3) Hospitality, Tourism, & Recreation (5) Information & Communication Technologies (6) Manufacturing & Product Design (14) Marketing, Sales, & Services (6) Public Services (3) Transportation.
Is this another “What Color is your Parachute?”
Wysocki always get asked “Is Careers By the People like “What Color is your Parachute?”” What Color is Your Parachute is the top selling career guide and it focuses on some subjects that Careers By the People does and others that Careers By the People does not. They are more supplemental than a competitor.
Careers By the People reviews 101 occupations from the people that worked them. They each get asked 20+ questions about their career and the majority have 5+ years in that occupation so you can read if they acquired their dream career or not.
Then, Wysocki reviews what he would have done differently in college in hopes to find that dream job or better yet great career. Wysocki reviews internships, career choice career planning for college, career advancement so you have career options in the hopes of career success.
Wysocki hopes with his career advice that one can choose the best career path for themselves so they can acquire an occupation that offers some type of joy and purpose.
When should career preparation/career planning start?
So many ask when should career planning start? Is this a good book for career planning in high school, is this career planning for teens, or is this a career book for college students only? Wysocki thinks career books for teens should target 10th grade and above. Others want to target elementary etc…..so for readers, Wysocki would go with 13 to adult. It’s great to inform young people about occupations but in more of a fun way prior to the serious topics that Careers By the People handles. Some look at this as a career counseling workbook whereas Wysocki looks at it as a tool to help you narrow down one of the most important decisions in your life.
