You can download the How To Change Your Career Workbook (With Examples) workbook from the resources section of this lecture.
In this workbook, I walk you through worked examples of every skill, trick and hack I've used to change my career from finance to project management.
You can download the How To Change Your Career Workbook (Without Examples) workbook from the resources section of this lecture.
This workbook does not include examples, so that you can go through it, complete the exercises and learn the skills and hacks that you need to change your career! :-)
Attached to this lecture are two downloadable scripts:
1) How to reach out to people for informational interviews
2) How to reach out to someone that you've been told would be good to talk to
3) How to reach back out to a valuable contact after a period of time
Remember, when reaching out to someone who you don't know, you will get more positive responses if:
- you reach out to people you have something in common with i.e. you went to the same uni, you are from the same place, etc.
- your email or message is short, punchy and easy to read
- the ask is not too big i.e. 5-10 minutes of their time on a friday afternoon is not too big an ask
- your ask for their help solving a specific problem i.e. you are trying to so what they've already done
- you ask them if you can help them in anyway
- the email is polite and respectful of their time
Attached to this lecture are the downloadable scripts:
1) How to reach out to someone to ask if you can shadow them
2) How to reach out to somone about work experience
Remember, when reaching out to someone who you don't know, first draft your message.
Then ask someone who is older than you and has experience of hiring people to review it and tell you what they think.
Even if it's a great first draft, they will have some small ideas on how you can polish it and make it even better.
The more refined and polished your message is the higher the number of replies that you will get! :-)
Attached to this lecture are the downloadable scripts:
1) How to reach out to a connected person
2) How to reach out to a person who does the role
3) How to reach out to an influencer on a professional group
Remember, when reaching out to someone who you don't know, it's going to be a numbers game.
I always try and send out 5-10 approaches, and then wait a few days and see how many I get back.
If I get zero or very few responses, then I will try to refine or change my message and repeat the process.
I will always show it to someone a bit older and wiser than me with experience in hiring people, and then keep polishing and refining the message.
Once I start to get a 50% response rate from all the approaches I send out then I know I've got a really strong message! :-)
