In the next segment of our Camtasia Masterclass, we delve into the powerful tool known as the "timeline." The timeline is your canvas for arranging and editing various media elements, such as screencast recordings, video clips, audio clips, and more.
? **Key Learning Objectives**:
1. **Timeline Navigation**: Gain a thorough understanding of how to navigate and utilize the timeline effectively for video editing.
2. **Media Management**: Learn how to manage different types of media, including screencast recordings, video clips, audio, and more within the timeline.
3. **Track Organization**: Understand the concept of tracks within the timeline, comprising Track 1, Track 2, and Track 3, each serving a unique purpose.
4. **Layering and Overlays**: Discover how the top track overlays on the lower ones, influencing the visibility of elements on the canvas.
5. **Visual Hierarchy**: Grasp the importance of track placement in determining what appears on the canvas, with practical examples.
As you dive into the timeline, you'll observe that it's organized into tracks: Track 1, Track 2, and Track 3. Each of these tracks plays a distinct role in your video editing process. Track 1 is currently empty, while Track 2 contains your screen recording, and Track 3 houses your logo.
One crucial aspect to remember is that elements on the top track take precedence over those on the lower tracks. For instance, the logo, positioned on the top track (Track 3), overlays and conceals the screen recording beneath it. This results in the logo being visible on the canvas, while the screen recording remains hidden.
However, if you decide to reposition the logo by dragging it to the lower track (Track 1), it will no longer be visible on the canvas. This shift in placement places the logo beneath the screen recording, altering the visual hierarchy.
Understanding these timeline dynamics is fundamental to crafting compelling videos and ensuring that your audience sees what you intend. As we proceed with our Camtasia Masterclass, you'll gain a more in-depth knowledge of timeline manipulation and the creative possibilities it offers.

As we begin, take a look at our timeline on track one, where a single clip combines both microphone audio and screen recording. The clip is easily identifiable by the icon and name associated with it.
To start making edits, we'll click on the clip, which will be surrounded by a selection border, making it clear that it's the focus of our editing efforts. The audio waveform, visible as spikes, represents the vocal elements of the recording.
Remember, when editing a screencast, prioritize audio adjustments before video enhancements for a seamless viewing experience.

Welcome back to our Camtasia Masterclass, where we dive deeper into the art of precise editing. In this lesson, we're going to focus on the "Trim" technique to remove unwanted sections from your recording.
? **Key Learning Objectives**:
1. **Understanding Audio Waveform**: Learn how to interpret audio waveforms to identify silent or unnecessary sections in your recording.
2. **Trimming Techniques**: Master the "Trim" tool to efficiently remove undesired portions from the beginning and end of your clip.
3. **Dead Air Space**: Understand the importance of leaving slight pauses before and after speaking for a natural audio flow.
4. **Playback and Preview**: Utilize playback controls to review your edits and ensure a seamless result.
We begin by examining the audio waveform. As you can see, the waveform starts when speaking begins and ends during periods of silence. We'll focus on trimming these silent sections.
To begin trimming, place your mouse cursor at the clip's beginning until it turns into a double-headed arrow, indicating the "Trim" tool is selected. Click and drag to the right, stopping just before the audio recommences, while also leaving a brief dead air space.
Dead air space consists of a second or two of silence before and after speaking, ensuring a natural audio flow. After adjusting, drag it slightly back to the left to include this space.
Now, let's address any gaps by closing them. Click and drag the clip to the left until it snaps into place, eliminating the gap.
To review your edit, place the Playhead at the timeline's beginning, either by clicking or using the keyboard shortcut "Control + Home." Hit the play button or press the spacebar to preview your trimmed clip.
The beginning of your clip sounds refined. Now, let's tackle the end, where another silent section needs removal.
Hover your mouse at the clip's end until it becomes a double-headed arrow, signifying the "Trim" tool. Click and drag to the left, stopping just before the audio ends, ensuring all unnecessary instructions are removed.
Once again, leave a small dead air space at the end for a natural audio conclusion.
Preview your final edit by hitting the play button or pressing the spacebar.
Congratulations, you've mastered the "Trim" technique, allowing you to eliminate unwanted portions efficiently and create polished screencasts.

Once we've identified the problem area, it's time to make the cut. Drag the green grabber handle to the left to set the starting point just before the mistake. Then, drag the red handle to set the endpoint just before the audio returns to normal.
You can either use the scissors tool or the keyboard shortcut "Control + X" to make the cut. Camtasia conveniently closes the gap between the remaining clips automatically.
Now, to return to the beginning of the clip, click at the start of the timeline or use the keyboard shortcut "Control + Home."

It means, you must know how to use a computer, the internet, and preferably a word processor or a spreadsheet Then it would be so much easier for you to learn Camtasia.

What Camtasia version do you need to follow along with this course?
My recommendation is you should have at least Camtasia 2019 version to follow along with this course because there are certain features that were introduced in Camtasia 2019 ver. and if you have an older ver. than Camtasia 2019 then you can’t use those certain features for ex: here are a few of them
-Auto-normalize Loudness (aka Automatic Audio Leveling)
-Mouse Cursor Smoothing (aka smooth out cursor movement)
-Logo support in Themes
-Library asset - Opens directly in Camtasia
-Custom Keyboard Shortcuts (revised in Camtasia 2019)
and so on…
What if I don't have Camtasia installed on my computer?
In case, you don’t have Camtasia installed then don’t worry. I will also share the link to download Camtasia for Windows and Mac and also teach you step-by-step how to install it.
Now some of you might have an older version of Camtasia like Camtasia 2018 or Camtasia 9.
If you do then still you can join the course and learn the core functionality of Camtasia which is always the same and you can cover many features except a few ones which were introduced in Camtasia 2019 as I mentioned before. Personally, my recommendation is if possible then use at least Camtasia 2019 ver.
Last but not least if you’ve any of these versions of Camtasia:
- Camtasia 2019
- Camtasia 2020
- Camtasia 2021
- Camtasia 2022
- Camtasia 2023
Then you’re good to go.
What version did you use to create this course?
I created this course using Camtasia 2019 and the reason is this version has laid the core foundation of Camtasia and many new features were introduced in Camtasia 2019. So no matter which version you have among these:
- Camtasia 2019
- Camtasia 2020
- Camtasia 2021
- Camtasia 2022
- Camtasia 2023
The core skills which I teach in this course are the same in all these versions. And above all I teach basics and essentials and core functionality, they are all same no matter which version you use. So if you have any of the above versions you're good to go.
