In this lesson, you will explore the rich history of cacao and its deep spiritual significance. Used in Mayan and Aztec rituals, cacao was considered a sacred plant and referred to as the “food of the gods.” It played a central role in ceremonies, offerings, and spiritual practices, symbolizing abundance, connection, and transformation. Despite centuries of change, cacao has retained its sacred essence, continuing to be a powerful tool for meditation, healing, and heart-opening experiences.
Beyond its historical significance, cacao offers unique physical and energetic benefits. It is rich in theobromine, which gently stimulates the body, enhances mental clarity, and promotes a sense of bliss. Cacao is also packed with antioxidants, magnesium, and essential nutrients, nourishing both the body and the mind. On an energetic level, it is known for opening the heart, deepening emotional awareness, and supporting spiritual connection, making it an ideal companion for ceremonial and personal practice.
Understanding Cacao: The Three Key Cacao Products
What makes ceremonial cacao different from other cacao products? In this lesson, we explore the three main types of cacao derivatives: cacao paste, cacao butter, and cacao powder. You’ll learn how each product is made, their unique properties, and which one is best suited for cacao ceremonies. By the end of this video, you’ll understand why cacao paste is the preferred choice for deep, heart-opening rituals.
Not all cacao is the same! In this lesson, we dive into the three main types of cacao beans: Criollo, Trinitario, and Forastero. In this video, you will see an example of my facilitation of a cacao ceremony that I conducted at a private embodiment workshop in Bali. This was a special gathering focused on exploring personal boundaries, embodiment, and deep self-connection.
The cacao ceremony I led had an important goal—to establish a connection with oneself, which in turn helped participants cultivate deeper and more authentic relationships with others. It became a key part of the event, bringing people together, creating a safe space, and aligning everyone on the same wavelength. This ceremony allowed participants to open up and share their thoughts and feelings freely.
A cacao ceremony consists of several stages:
• We start with a short meditation to tune into ourselves.
• Then, I introduce cacao and explain its significance as a plant medicine.
• Next comes the cacao meditation, where we slowly enjoy the drink together.
• The closing part of the ceremony is an opening circle, where each participant shares a little about themselves and sets an intention for the evening. At this moment, I usually invite people to answer three questions: What is my name? How do I feel right now? What is my intention for the evening?
After this ceremony, we transitioned into an authentic communication practice. This deep practice helps participants understand each other better, communicate from a place of vulnerability and emotional openness. If you want to learn more about authentic communication, you can explore these practices on my website or through a series of videos on YouTube.
This is another example of a cacao ceremony I facilitated. In this video, you can see how the ceremony took place during my tantra workshop in Goa, India.
As a tantra teacher, I often incorporate cacao ceremonies into my workshops because they help participants connect with their bodies, become more aware of their sensations, and awaken their sensitivity. Cacao, with its rich texture and deep flavor, is an ideal tool for this. I encourage people to fully immerse themselves in the experience—savoring the aroma, taste, spices, and temperature of the drink to set the right tone and create an atmosphere of pleasure.
For me, tantra and cacao always go hand in hand because both are about pleasure and heart-opening. Energetically, cacao represents the four elements: earth (cacao beans), water (used to prepare the drink), fire (needed to melt the cacao), and air (symbolizing the heart chakra and love). Cacao is known as a heart-opening elixir, making it a perfect companion for tantra, which is centered on love and self-connection.
The ceremony began with an introduction to the evening’s theme, the creation of a safe space, and an explanation of the essence of tantra. I then shared insights about cacao and its properties. With special music playing in the background, I poured the cacao, and since the group was small—only 10 people—each participant approached me individually to receive their cup, along with a symbolic card carrying a message.
After that, we moved into the cacao meditation, slowly savoring the drink and fully experiencing its effects. I gave participants a few minutes of silence to tune into their sensations. Then, we transitioned into the first tantric practice—wild ecstatic dance, where participants could freely express their authentic selves.
If you are working with a larger audience, you may ask someone to help distribute the cacao or pass it around in a circle from heart to heart. However, in this intimate setting, each participant received cacao directly from my hands, which made the ceremony feel more personal and meaningful.
This cacao ceremony took place as part of a yoga retreat in Moscow. It had a more traditional and meditative structure, emphasizing deep presence and heart-centered connection. The main focus was on setting a sacred intention and using cacao as a bridge between the physical and the spiritual.
The ceremony began with a grounding meditation, allowing participants to arrive fully in the space and connect with their breath. After that, I introduced cacao, explaining its role as a sacred plant and heart-opener. The act of receiving cacao became a ritual in itself—each cup was passed from heart to heart in a silent flow, reinforcing the sense of unity within the group.
Once everyone had their cacao, we moved into a meditative state, savoring each sip mindfully and tuning into the warmth and energy of the drink. This slowly transitioned into a breathwork practice, where we used deep, conscious breathing to amplify the effects of cacao, helping participants release tension and expand their awareness. The practice ended in stillness, allowing everyone to integrate the experience before closing the ceremony with gratitude.
In this lesson, you will learn how to make ceremonial chocolate in the form of candies and bars using the same ingredients as for cacao ceremonies. We will break down the step-by-step process of chocolate-making.
After watching this lesson, you will be able to create not only delicious but also nutritious ceremonial chocolates that retain all the valuable properties of cacao and can become part of your rituals or everyday enjoyment.
