Functions of Management refer to the basic activities performed by a manager to achieve organizational goals efficiently and effectively. Management is not a single activity but a process that involves planning work, organizing resources, appointing suitable employees, guiding and motivating them, and ensuring that work is carried out according to plan.
There are five main functions of management: Planning, Organising, Staffing, Directing, and Controlling.
Planning involves deciding objectives and future actions. Organising focuses on arranging tasks and resources. Staffing ensures the right people are placed in the right jobs. Directing guides and motivates employees to perform efficiently. Controlling involves measuring performance and taking corrective actions.
All these functions are interrelated and continuous in nature. Together, they help an organization achieve its objectives in a systematic and effective manner.
Coordination refers to the process of integrating and harmonising the activities of different individuals and departments in an organization to achieve common goals. In every organization, various departments perform different tasks, and coordination ensures that all these activities are directed towards the same objectives.
Coordination helps in maintaining unity of action, avoiding conflicts, and ensuring smooth functioning of the organization. It is required at all levels of management and in all functions such as planning, organising, staffing, directing, and controlling. Therefore, coordination is considered the essence of management.
Without effective coordination, even well-planned activities may fail to produce desired results.
Management is considered both an art and a science and also a profession to a limited extent.
A successful manager combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills to achieve organizational goals efficiently and effectively.
Management as an Art
Management is an art because it involves the application of personal skills, creativity, and experience. Managers use their judgment and leadership qualities to deal with different situations. Since every organization and employee is different, management requires continuous practice and innovation.
Management as a Science
Management is also a science as it has a systematic body of knowledge consisting of principles, concepts, and theories. These principles establish a cause-and-effect relationship and are applicable in all organizations. However, management is not a pure science because human behaviour cannot be predicted with complete accuracy.
Management as a Profession
Management is considered a profession because it has specialised knowledge, formal education, and professional bodies like management associations. However, it is not a full profession as there is no compulsory qualification or legally enforced code of conduct for managers. Therefore, management is regarded as an emerging profession.
