Welcome to Building Foundations: My First Piano Lesson! This course is designed to be an introductory course for every age. No experience needed, we are starting from ground zero and building our foundation.
Posture is one of the most important fundamentals with any instrument you'll play! Good posture will save you from more than just back aches, it'll also improve your playing!
Let's break down our piano finger numbers and musical alphabet!
Let's identify all of our keys. We only have seven notes, that repeat themselves over and over again on the piano. Once we learn the pattern of our seven notes, we unlock the entire piano.
The fiver finger scale is a great warm up for every piano player. It helps with isolation and strength. Start every practice time with scales to warm up your muscles!
We learned our notes on the white keys, but what about the black keys? Here we break down how to identify our sharps and flats.
Practice video: Identification practice. This video walks you through all seven notes, giving you a chance to identify all of them. Pause the video in between notes to take your own pace at identifying where the notes are on your piano at home. **Optional practice: write down the seven notes on individual slips of paper. Put them in a cup and mix them up. Pull them out one at a time and identify the note written on the page on your piano.
Let's break it down; Lines spell out "Every Good Boy Does Fine" and Spaces spell the word "FACE". Memorize those two phrases and this will be super easy! We'll break down what that means and looks like in our video.
Let's play our first song together. We'll be using a Metronome, you can download one for free on any smart device. We are at 60 beats per minute (bpm). You should have downloaded your sheet music back in our last lesson, but in case you forgot it's included here again as well.
Now let's take a look at our chords for this song! We can play this one song several different ways, and there's no one single correct way to do things. I love to give my students the power to make their own choices, so you choose which style you like best and lean into that!
Thank you for joining me in Building Foundations: My First Piano Lesson! I hope you now leave the course with the confidence to being learning more and more music pieces! Keep an eye out for more courses that will go further in depth into piano theory and skills.
