Welcome to Building Foundations: Classical Piano! In this course we will be taking you through the exciting process of learning how to read sheet music to play a classical style of piano. We will be learning theory to help you along the way, and showing you how to break down musical selections into smaller more manageable sizes to making learning music faster and easier.
Let's start at the very beginning, how to read our staffs! The most important information from this lesson:
Treble Clef: Spaces - FACE; Lines - Every Good Boy Does Fine
Bass Clef: Spaces - All Cows Eat Grass; Lines - Great Big Dogs Fall Asleep
Now that we've learned how to read the notes, let's learn what everything else on our music sheet means.
Let's go through how to read our note values and rests! After going through this lecture, download the files below and go through the practice rhythm chart on your own (counting and clapping through the rhythms one measure at a time).
Let's take a look at a short example of music. Remember, there is more than one way to learn a song. Download the pdf before going through the lesson so you can read along.
Welcome to your first practice piece! This is a super easy example, but you can find your own more complicated pieces online or you can grab a practice book.
Scales are so important for both our theory knowledge and as exercises for our hands! At first these will take you a while to get through. But the more you practice them, the faster they'll get. These are amazing warm ups to use when you first sit down at a piano.
Even more exercises and theory for your piano playing!
Theory is the why and how behind what we're playing. Let's take a look at some important information to help you understand more about music and the songs you'll eventually be playing.
All of your major and minor chords in one place! Download the pdf attached for an entire chord dictionary of major and minors
Going even further, let's learn how to turn your major triad into a plethora of other chords.
Let's go deeper into the how and why of our chords!
Once you've gotten a grasp on your major scales, take a look at the second page of your scale sheet for our minor scales!
We've already covered a basic meter when learning our song earlier, but let's talk about some more meters that you'll encounter in music.
Here are some of my favorite books and resources to help you continue your journey on learning music!
Building Foundations: Classical Piano is for anyone wanting to learn how to read sheet music in general (not just classical music). This class will help you gain the skills necessary to read any piece of sheet music including lead sheets of your favorite songs, classical pieces, Christmas music, curriculum books, and more.
In this course, you need a basic understanding of the piano itself, but you do not have to have any theory knowledge. We will start at the beginning, with learning to notes on our sheet music. Then we'll progress through reading the symbols on our sheets (dynamics, hand positioning, tempo markings, etc). We'll learn how to read rhythms, counting and playing our songs. And by the end, gain a solid understanding of a music sheet. We'll go even further into theory and learn all of our major scales and major/minor chords, circle of fifths, scale degrees, and more.
By the end of this course you will be able to read through sheets, understand what you're playing, and connect it all to a knowledge of theory. So grab your piano and if you have a sheet music that you want to learn, sit down and your piano and let's go step by step through this journey together!
