In this hands-on project-based course, you’ll learn how to build a complete Checkers game from scratch using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, and then take it to the next level by adding real-time multiplayer functionality with Node and SocketIO.
We start by building the core game mechanics, including setting up the board, implementing piece movement, handling valid moves, capturing opponent pieces, and promoting kings. You’ll learn how to structure your JavaScript code in a clean and scalable way so the game logic remains easy to manage as the project grows.
Once the local two-player version is complete, we move into the exciting part—turning it into an online multiplayer game. You’ll set up a Node server and use SocketIO to enable real-time communication between players in different browsers. This includes syncing game state, handling player turns, and ensuring both players always see the same board updates instantly.
Along the way, you’ll also improve the user experience with CSS styling, animations, and responsive design to make the game feel polished and interactive.
You will also learn how to debug real-time applications, manage connection states, and handle edge cases like player disconnects or invalid moves in multiplayer mode. These are real-world skills used in production-level web applications and online games.
By the end of this course, you won’t just have a fully working Checkers game—you’ll also understand how real-time multiplayer web games work behind the scenes. These skills are directly transferable to other game ideas and real-world applications like chat apps, collaborative tools, and live dashboards.
