Outline of this 11-part course on how to make an Action Figure, using only Cotton thread.
Raw materials - 1mm cotton thread rolls, scissors/clippers, glue
Starting with making the fingers and wrists of the action figure
Completion of the forearm is important to get a sense of the size of the overall action figure, even before you've built it.
The completed forearm will be useful in determining the sizes of the remaining parts, by checking one's own body for scale.
Constructing the toes, feet, ankles and lower legs of the Action figure
Building the upper parts of the arms and legs, and the shoulder and hip connectors to the torso.
Making the Head follows a slightly different construct, since the head is round, unlike the other *cylindrical* parts.
Entangling and connecting all remaining loose threads in the torso of the Action figure.
How to use this construction technique to build your own character, and to build something that need not be humanoid.
What makes thread a viable material for making such Action figures? Limitations of this technique, and the opportunities to combine it with other materials.
Final Video of this Series. Some of the better Thread action figures that I've created in the past, are available in the Resource material for reference.
Using Cotton thread to make solid structures may seem counter-intuitive at first, but this course will utilize only cotton thread to construct a working action figure, that is as flexible and solid as its store-bought plastic counterparts.
Individual parts of the body of the action figure will be made using a combination of tying knots, and wrapping multiple layers of thread over a central column of thread.
In this overall construction technique, there are 2 important things to focus on - rigidity and proportions - how you can use only thread to make a very sturdy structure, and how important it is to make sure that all parts of the action figure follow a certain uniform scale, so that no piece ends up becoming too big or too small.
In the scope for this course, we’ll use the proposed technique to make a humanoid action-figure, but we’ll also cover how the very same construction principle can be used to make your own character designs which need not be humanoid.
This technique requires no sophisticated tools and equipment, other than glue and a pair of scissors. The action figures constructed using this technique are safe to construct, and safe to play with. Being made of only cotton thread, these do not incorporate any environmentally or physically harmful materials, and are infinitely repairable.
