In this lesson, I’ll explain why this course is important and what we’ll be learning together.

We’re going to explore how to build ethical AI chatbots — smart computer programs that can talk, listen, and help others. But more than just coding, we’ll learn how to make chatbots that are kind, fair, and safe.

    We’ll cover things like:
? Why ethics matter in AI
? How to design respectful, helpful conversations
? Ways to protect privacy and keep users safe
? And how to use logic blocks in PictoBlox to build cool bots!

By the end, you’ll be ready to create your own chatbots that make a difference — like EcoBot, HealthBot, and Homework Helper!

Description

A fun, hands-on course developed by Dr. Faisal Naeem, Assistant Professor in Canada and a Top 2% Research Scientist, where students learn how to build smart, ethical chatbots using PictoBlox — a colorful, block-based coding platform designed for beginners!

This course introduces young learners to the exciting world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a simple, creative, and age-appropriate way. No previous coding or AI experience is required. Students learn step by step through practical activities and engaging projects.

Before building their own bots, learners will explore how AI and chatbots work, how computers make decisions, and why responsible AI matters. They’ll discover important ideas such as privacy, fairness, kindness, safety, and respectful communication — helping them understand that good technology is not only smart, but also responsible.

Students will create exciting chatbot projects such as:

EcoBot — Shares planet-saving tips and encourages environmentally friendly choices
HealthBot — Provides friendly, positive wellness suggestions
Homework Helper — Makes learning and studying more interactive and fun

Along the way, students will:

  • Understand the basics of AI and chatbots

  • Learn to protect user privacy and personal information

  • Create smart, safe, and respectful conversations

  • Build chatbot logic using colorful coding blocks — no complex typing required

  • Practice problem-solving and computational thinking

  • Explore how AI can be used to help people and communities

  • Develop creativity and confidence through hands-on projects

  • Think critically about how technology should behave in the real world

Perfect For

Learners ages 12–16 interested in AI and technology
Beginners who want to explore coding without complicated programming languages
Creative learners who enjoy designing and building projects
Parents and teachers supporting young AI explorers
Anyone curious about how chatbots work and how we can make AI safer and more responsible

Note for Parents & Adults

Children may need help from a parent, guardian, or teacher when setting up accounts. This can include using an adult's email address for PictoBlox registration and assisting with any required online access.

The goal isn't simply to teach students how to use AI. It's to help them begin thinking like responsible AI creators — asking important questions about what they build, who it helps, what information it uses, and how technology can be designed responsibly.

Let’s inspire the next generation to build AI that is smart, creative, kind, safe, and ethical!

Who this course is for:

  • Families with no previous programming experience who want an accessible introduction to building AI chatbots using PictoBlox and visual block-based coding.
