Understand how the course is structured—its three modules of fundamentals, a hands-on build and post-production
WordPress is the world’s most popular CMS. WordPress is free, flexible and responsive. It builds static, dynamic and hybrid websites. WordPress can build a variety of websites for virtually any kind of business including e-commerce sites. Best of all, you don't need any specialist, technical background knowledge to begin building with WordPress.
We explore these important ideas for a business website: Using social media for business is not a substitute for a proper website. Template sites like Wix and Squarespace may be suitable for some businesses but not for all. A WordPress site gives you ownership, is truly free and flexible to match your needs.
WordPress comes in two flavours - the .com version and the .org version. We use the .org version after understanding why. Again, there are two ways to install WordPress - one on a web host like GoDaddy and the other on your own computer. We install it on your computer to learn the software without spending money. Plus a brief intro to plugins and themes at the heart of WordPress
In the main section of this course we build a website for an imaginary, family-run pharmaceutical firm. We examine the reasons for this choice of website. We build 5 commonly used pages of a typical website. Also, we discuss the ideal way for you to approach this course. And I provide the sample content to build the small business, pharma website.
Here's a look, page by page, at the final website we build in the course. Each page is shown and discussed for its features we aim to create.
To install WordPress on your computer you need to download a special piece of software called Local by Flywheel. Follow instructions to install WordPress. Make the site secure with an SSL certificate. Tweak a couple of more settings in the Settings page at the backend of the WordPress site. You now have a working WordPress site on your computer, although it is currently totally empty..
We learn how to clean up the dashboard by eliminating distractions. We make further tweaks on the Settings page. We install our first plugin after learning to evaluate what makes for a great plugin.
We learn how to learn an important ‘page builder’ plugin called Elementor, a hugely popular plugin in the WordPress world. We install the Astra theme and figure out how to use the Starter Templates plugin we installed in the previous lesson.
NOTE: Extract the aboutpage.zip in the Resources. Everything you need for building the About page is here. Follow instructions in the video to use them.
We review the roles of Elementor, Astra and Starter Templates first. We use the Pharma template to build the About page. We discuss the client’s brief for the About page and finish the masthead of the About page to our satisfaction.

We finish the About page in this lesson while learning many aspects of WordPress usage. Like text placements, image placements, creating sections, deleting sections and how to work with royalty-free images. By the end of the lesson our first page is now complete!
NOTE: Extract the global.zip in the Resources. Everything you need for this chapter is here. Follow instructions in the video. Global settings affect the entire site, not a particular page. We fix them here for our site in this lesson. We use the Astra theme to help us place the logo that displays throughout the site. We learn how to change footer blocks with Astra and Elementor. And we change a menu item in the main menu using WordPress itself.
NOTE: Extract the productspage.zip in the Resources. Everything you need for this chapter is here. Follow instructions in the video.
Here we understand the client’s brief on their products, plan the sections of the page and edit the template page to make it into our very own products page.

We built the Contact page by editing a template page and filling in our own details. We built a contact form using the WP-Forms plugin. We also edited the Main Menu using the Astra theme.

We learn the difference between a blog post and a blog page. In this lesson we write out a single blog post complete with text, an image and category. Once we have a set of individual posts, we are then ready to build out a blog page.
Now that we have created some blog posts, we can display short excerpts from them on a single page called the blog page. The blog page allows visitors to see the various posts on the site in one go and decide which one to choose to read further. We learn how to create the blog page in WordPress.
NOTE: Extract the homepage.zip in the Resources. Everything you need for this chapter is here. Follow instructions in the video.
We learn how to build the home page with its various sections, including links to the inside pages of the site. We analyse the client brief, create the masthead and the company legacy section just underneath the masthead section.
NOTE: Extract the homepage.zip in the Resources. Everything you need for this chapter is here. Follow instructions in the video.
We complete the remaining sections of the home page, which completes the building of all the pages of the site. In the process, we learn how to delete an unwanted section, create a new section and edit existing sections from the template.
NOTE: Download the imageopt.jpg in the Resources. Follow instructions in the video to optimise the image.
We learn how to optimise images for the web. We add an appointments handling plugin and a legal page called a Privacy Policy page. The site is now well and truly complete.
NOTE: Extract the header-footer.zip in the Resources to find the favicon.png file. Follow instructions in the video.
Once a website is finished, there are always corrections from the client. We learn to how to replace images and text and other changes.
We get some practice in changing around the footer blocks as also opening out the comments section of the blog posts. These are the kind of changes that happen on client sites in real life.
We learn to add 3 secure plugins to the website after all the content revisions are over. The plugins protect the site against malware attacks, increase loading speed and provide for periodic backups of the whole site.
It’s time now to take the fully finished website online onto a web hosting company of your choice.
