Hi Everyone!
My name is Nicole Thompson and I am your instructor for this braiding course! To learn a little bit more about me I made this video for you!
In this video I explain why braiding is such a crucial skill to know as a hairdresser and an updo artist! Braids are becoming more and more popular and your clients expect you to know them! Watch this video to hear all of my reasons why I 100% recommend not only learning to braid, but truly mastering it!
In this video we will discuss the 4 common products that stylists use when braiding hair.
The quick summary:
1. Dry shampoo
2. Salt spray
3. Semi-shine wax - Medium hold
4. Hairspray/ texturizing spray
The hair is hair to braid when it is too soft and shiny. in order to create tight braids you will need some grit and texture.
I do not recommend one particular brand, just use whatever products you love! Play around and try out new products, see what happens!
In this video I will discuss hand and body position in braiding. It is a common mistake that people make when they think that their body position will not effect the braid. But that is not true, your body and hand position can completely change your braid. Watch this video to get some tips and tricks to body and hand positions when braiding.
In this video I will explain the basics of "deconstructing" a braid, also know as "pulling it apart." There will be MANY videos on deconstructing braids so don't worry, you don't have to master it after this one video, this is just to get you started on understanding the fundamentals. I will have separate videos on many different braids to help you practice and master your deconstructing!
Whenever you finish a braid, deconstruct it before you take it down. this way you get TONS of practice pulling braids apart and you get really used to all the little things that it requires.
In this video I will show you the basics of how to refine your braids. braiding almost always causes frizz and flyways but we can reduce the flyways by using product DURING our braid. BUT there will always be frizz after, so this video will help you reduce excess frizz.
Remember, the more you deconstruct a braid, the more frizz you will create.
In this video I will teach you the rope braid crossing right, same fundamental technique as the last video but now we are talking about directions and understanding why its called the right vs. left. rope braid
In this video I will teach you the rope braid is its most classic form. Rope braids are not that common but are a fundamental technique. You can use these inside updos and as stand alone braids.
This absolute beginners video will start you off learning this braid in a pony tail, so get your ponytail ready and lets get started!

In this video I will teach you the rope braid crossing left, same fundamental technique as the last video but now we are talking about directions and understanding why its called the right vs. left. rope braid
In this video I will teach you the difference between a loose and tight rope braid. It is a very subtle difference but one that you should understand because it will influence the outcome of the braid and how it will respond to deconstructing/manipulating it once the braid is complete.
If you feel you are ready for the next video, keep this braid in and get ready for deconstructing this braid.
In this video I will teach you to deconstruct the rope braid. Although it may see the deconstructing all braids are the same, there are some specifics to each braid that will come in handy. They will help enhance the look of the rope vs just making it look messy.

In this video I will teach you the french rope braid, which is very similar to the classic rope braid but it it travels down/across the head by adding sections of hair.
which is significantly harder than the rope braid so please practice your rope braid and get that down before you move on to this tutorial! It will help you understand when and how to add hair to each section so that you can make your rope braids "travel" down the head.

In this video I will demonstrate the "relaxed twist braid." Although similar to the rope braid, they are different but equally important to master. The twists are becoming more and more popular. Twists are not classically considered a braid but I felt that they are important to learn and a welcomed addition to this course.

Master the flat wrap three-strand braid, a rare technique that keeps the braid flat with right over center left over center and careful hand placement for a tight, bold look.
In this video I will teach you the 3 strand braid again but with the hair down. Although this may seem repetitive but you'd be surprised how hard it is for some people to transition from ponytail braids to "hair down" braids. It can be difficult to manipulate hair that is wanting to move away from you while also trying to make it look good.
If you feel you are ready for the next video, keep this braid in and get ready for deconstructing this braid.
In this video we will do over deconstructing/pulling apart the 3 strand braid, have fun create a loose messy 3 strand braid that will completely transform the look and feel of this classic braid.

In this video I will teach you the difference between a loose and tight braids. It is a very subtle difference but one that you should understand because it will influence the outcome of the braid and how it will respond to deconstructing/manipulating it once the braid is complete.
Loose braids have a dramatically different "mood" to them so its important to understand how to create them so you are always creating your braids intentionally so that you can re-create braids over and over again with predictability.
In this video you will learn how to do a classic french braid which is still a three stand braid but it it travels down/across the head by adding sections of hair.
This is significantly harder than the traditional 3-strand braid so please practice your classic three strand braid and get that down before you move on to this tutorial! It will help you understand when and how to add hair to each section so that you can make your braid "travel" down the head.
I will show you two main types of french braids and how drastically different they can look and make the client feel. Please understand the subtle differences in the execution and how much they can impact the way the client likes/dislikes the final braid.
This style braid is coming back in style so I wanted to highlight this video in order to make sure you understand how traditional "pigtail french braids" are sectioned out. This sectioning and placement can be done with any braid placement you will learn throughout this course.
In this video you will learn how to do a single-sided french braid with is like a hybrid between the traditional 3-strand braid and a french. Hair is only added to one side of the braid creating a feeling of the braid pulling in one direction only.
It will help you understand when and how to add hair to each section so that you can make your rope braids "travel" and they help you understand which direction goes on which side of the head.
This braid is great as a partial hairstyle or as an element in an updo. They are elegant and versatile, making them a very popular addition to your styling skills
In this video I will teach you the 3 strand braid but reversed, meaning the the strands are being passed in a reverse direction as the classic form on this braid. Classic 3 strand braids are the most common braids in worldwide and most know how to do them but we will cover them just in case. You can use these inside updos and as stand alone braids.
This absolute beginners video will start you off learning this braid in a pony tail, so get your ponytail ready and lets get started!

It can be difficult to manipulate hair that is wanting to move away from you while also trying to make it look good.
I will also teach you a trick to add some flair to the reverse braid because it can look a little odd as a stand alone braid without tricks like this.
If you feel you are ready for the next video, keep this braid in and get ready for deconstructing this braid.
In this video we will do over deconstructing/pulling apart the reverse 3 strand braid, have fun create a loose messy 3 strand braid that will completely transform the look and feel of this classic braid.

Everything is very similar to a classic french braid but the outcome is drastically different, especially once deconstructed/pulled apart.
This braid is incredibly popular right now and is a very important braid to learn. It can be difficult at first but with lots of practice this are beautiful braids as stand alone braids, partial hairstyles or a beautiful element in an updo hairstyle.
In this video we will go over deconstructing the dutch braid This braid is awesome for deconstructing because of the way this braid is constructed, it sits on the "outside" of the braid allowing you to make this braid very big, and very "messy" so this braid easily transformed from tight and bold looking to soft, big and boho in just a few minutes.

In this video I teach you the waterfall braid in the way I personally I like to execute this braid technique.
Most of the time I see this braid done it looks very "childish" because of the way the hair is sectioned, showing part lines and scalp.
This version of the waterfall braid is more elegant and doesn't show any part lines.
It can be a bit tricky bit is definitely worth practicing because all of the prom girls are asking for this braid.
In this video I teach you the Topsy tail and a few variations of this.
This technique is not technically a braid but it is getting increasingly popular as elements in braids, ways to secure the top of the hair then braiding down and even in elements of updos.
This braid is getting more and more popular is is equally as beautiful as a french fishtail but much more beginner friendly and also a very sturdy braid that can be used in endless ways.
In this video I will teach you a variation of the "mermaid braid" using only topsy tails.
In this video I will teach you one version of a "boho braid."
There are endless variations to this braid and what you can do including adding another type of braid, but I will show you this version using only the topsy tail so you can see how truly versatile this technique is.
In this video I will show you the absolute beginners way to do an infinity braid, these braids are becoming more an more popular as accent braids in half up half downs and within half up half down.
This braid is only going to get more popular so its important to master this technique and I will soon be releases more videos on more advanced versions of this braid.
