RESEARCH PAPERS:
Mission, Vision, and Values: What Do They Say?
Steven H. Cady, Jane V. Wheeler, Jeff DeWolf, Michelle Brodke
Abstract: Despite widespread recognition of its importance, very little empirical research has been conducted on strategy documents, particularly Mission or Vision statements. A database containing 489 organizational statements from 300 different organizations was analyzed via content analysis to determine how many distinct concepts could be identified and the most commonly used concepts. Statements were carefully read to determine if multiple use of a term within a single statement indicated multiple meanings. The results indicate that while traditional titles are most often used to label such statements, there is a wide variety of terms used to express the ideas contained in them. Many organizational statements contain so many unique concepts that they begin to suffer from high density.
2. VISION, MISSION AND CORPORATE VALUES. A COMPARATIVE
ANALYSIS OF THE TOP 50 U.S. COMPANIES
Constantin BRĂTIANU, Georgiana Victoria BĂLĂNESCU
Academy of Economic Studies, Bucharest
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the increasing importance of defining vision, mission and corporate values by a successful company. These three entities may be
formulated in separate statements, or they may be integrated in a single one. Regardless of their formulation, they have the purpose to communicate internally and externally the existential goal of the company and the core values of their integrated activities. The paper presents a comparative analysis of the way vision, mission and corporate values are formulated by the top 50 U. S. companies. A qualitative and quantitative research has been performed, based on a set of main characteristics these semantic entities have.
3. Vision and Mission in Organization: Myth or Heuristic Device?
Taiwo, Akeem A, Lawal, Fatai Alani, Agwu, M. Edwin
Abstract:
Vision and mission statements are considered as an important part of strategic management process for organization. It applies to all types of organizations such as public, private, profit or non-profit making, multinational as well as small and medium scale enterprises. A well prepared vision and mission statements would distinguish one organization from another by showing unique characteristic that differentiates it from others. This paper seeks to analyze the significance of vision and mission statements on the attainment of organizational goals. The paper focused on exploring the roles and significance of vision and mission statements to an organization. The findings indicate that vision and mission statements that were properly crafted and implemented could influence organizational employee in their day-to-day activities and assist in the attainment of organizational goals with the mission and vision as a guiding light. The study recommends that organization should craft a meaningful vision and mission statements in order to place the organization on the right path. Furthermore, these should be updated with the passage of time for currency and better focus for the organization. Finally, organizational managers must check regularly the levels of compliance and its adequacy and their contribution to the performance of the organization and the achievement of its set goals.
4. Mission statements exposed
Tahir Sufi, Howard Lyons
Abstract:
In the strategic management literature mission statements are said to be an inseparable part of corporate strategy. It has been argued that they have an impact on the performance of the organization, yet the evidence is unclear. This study is an investigation into the relationship between the financial success of hospitality enterprises and their mission statements. Mission statements of 30 top hospitality enterprises were evaluated. This sample is of significance as it represents some of the largest corporations, and about 200 of the largest brands in the hospitality industry. The mission statements were scored and these scores were tested for correlation with three financial performance indicators. The results indicated that while there was a statistically significant correlation between the mission statements and the annual turnover, there was no significant correlation with the net profit margin or the return on equity. The article concludes by considering how firms may improve their performance by better managing their mission statements.
5.. Leveraging Organizational Performance through Effective Mission Statement
Ekpe Oyono Ekpe1, Sunday Isaac Eneh1& Benjamin J. Inyang1
Abstract:
The mission statement is a critical and an integral part of the organization as an entity and the operating plan, which has become a unique vehicle through which the organization in the business world, articulates it strategic intent to exist, survive, grow and how it relates with stakeholders around it and including the wider society. The important question to ask is whether or not the existence of a mission statement is associated with or influences organizational performance? The findings from the various studies which explored this relationship appear rather inconclusive. Adopting a qualitative research approach, this study critically explored the essential link between a mission statement and organizational performance. The study established that the potential power of an effective mission statement in leveraging organizational performance was derived mainly from the fact that a mission statement is the starting point of the organization’s entire planning process, which serves as the basis for the formulation of objectives and strategies appropriate to the organization’s overall purpose and legitimate its existence. The study proposed that organization should strive to improve its mission statement as well as communicate same effectively to create mutual expectations among stakeholders.
6. . Adopting mission and vision statements by employees: The case of TAV Airports
Gamze Orhan*, Dilek Erdoğan, Vildan Durmaz
Abstract
Mission and vision statements are popular both in the extant literature and the practice for the companies’ strategic management. While many studies have been realized about relationship between vision-mission statements and firm performance, there is very little studies which ask the answer if vision and mission is adopted by employees in an organization. Our study focus on the perspectives of employees about the vision and mission statements of their firms in which they work. Based on a survey of employees in TAV Airports, this paper aimed to explore the employees’ state of awareness, perceptions and attitudes towards the firm’s vision and mission statements
7. The concepts of vision and mission revisited
J J Murphy
Abstract:
It is contended that debated differences between Vision, Purpose, Paradigm, Strategic Intent, and Mission are either peripheral or semantic. They represent the same essential concept with the exception of Mission. The analogy of how the infant brain rapidly creates neural pathways to recognise, preserve, construct and interact with the language, culture, beliefs and values of its immediate environment is used to describe how the infant organisation, through the stages of its life cycle, similarly constructs a language, culture, and belief and value system derivative of its environment. It is a paradigm for survival that, ironically, can become so resistant to change that the organization is imprisoned in a 'paradigm box'. Case studies of Wal-Mart, Hewlett Packard, Matsushita Appliances, and The Body Shop demonstrate this evolution of Vision and the way it encapsulates culture, values and beliefs. It is explained how a company can change its Vision and break free of a 'paradigm box' by means of the Focused Approach. Conditions prevalent at the foundation of the company are compared with those of the present to ascertain the degree of paradigm shift, and practical steps to implement change in a controlled way are presented. The three views of Mission, namely strategic, philosophical/ethical, and military, are discussed. It is concluded that Mission stands as a separate concept because it embodies the 'do' function of an organisastion, and should not be clouded with attributes such as values, ethics, and so forth which properly belong in the Vision statement.
8. Rethinking the firm’s mission and purpose
Canals L Jordi
Abstract:
The dominant notion of the firm in Management theory is mostly borrowed from Economics and assumes that firms maximize profits or market value. This notion may be at the roots of today’s basic problems in corporations. The current financial crisis has laid them bare. That notion is coherent neither with a broader view of human nature, nor with a wider perspective on the purpose of the firm. Moreover, this hypothesis may have negative effects on firms’ leadership and governance, making the role of senior executives in society unattractive, and may erode corporate reputation. In this paper, we review those arguments and present a more comprehensive view of the firm.
