Boolean search is a type of search that allows users to combine keywords with operators such as AND, OR, NOT, and parentheses to produce more relevant and precise search results. Named after mathematician and logician George Boole, Boolean search helps users filter and refine their queries to retrieve information more efficiently.
Keywords refer to specific terms or phrases that recruiters use to search for resumes or candidates in a database or an applicant tracking system (ATS). These keywords are essential for narrowing down and refining search results to identify potential candidates with the desired skills, qualifications, and experience.
Here are the basic Boolean operators:
AND: This operator narrows down the search by requiring that both terms or conditions be present in the results. For example, "sales AND quota" would retrieve results that include both "sales" and "quota."
OR: This operator broadens the search by retrieving results that include either of the terms or conditions. For example, "sales OR quota" would retrieve results that include either "sales" or "quota" or both.
NOT: This operator excludes specific terms from the search results. For example, "sales NOT quota" would retrieve results that include "sales" but exclude any results that also include "quota."
Parentheses (): These are used to group terms and control the order of operations. For example, "(sales OR quota) AND EdTech" would retrieve results that include either "sales" or "quota" and also include "EdTech."
Boolean search strings refer to the use of Boolean operators and keywords to create specific and targeted queries when searching for candidates in databases, job boards, or online platforms. Recruiters often use Boolean search strings to enhance the precision of their searches and find candidates who match specific criteria.
Here's an example Boolean search string for a software developer with expertise in either Java or Python:
("software developer" OR programmer) AND (Java OR Python) AND NOT "entry-level"
