Welcome to the course!
In this module we will lay the foundation for the book — we will study the structure, work with the text and create the first characters.
Module result: Character profiles completed.
We wish you inspiration and good luck!
Study the theory part of the lesson:
Book structure and types of illustrations.
The place of text in the book.
Copy practice.
Then move on to the practice — determine the number of spreads in the sketches. The fairy tale text has already been divided into logical blocks by pages, all you need to do is fill the pages with images. Identify the introduction, setup, climax, resolution and finale in the text. Get to know the characters, study the references for the story and complete the copy practice — draw the wolf in two variations based on the animation.
Study the theory part of the lesson:
Character is conveyed through silhouette and proportions, character expressions (Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf).
Then complete the practice — create 2–3 variations of Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf with your own design and arrange them on a sheet. For an advanced level: depict each character in a situation, for example the wolf behind a tree, Little Red Riding Hood with a basket on the path.
Module result: Arranged character sketches.
Congratulations on your new assignment! In this module we work on the storyboard and take the first steps toward the final illustration.
Module result: 6 book spread sketches and 1 illustration selected for final refinement.
We wish you inspiration and good luck!
Study the theory part of the lesson:
Narrative rhythms: alternating calm and dynamic scenes.
Alternating shots and types of shots.
How to make the reading dynamic and alive.
Then move on to the practice — draw the storyboard and explore composition variations.
Break down the chosen illustration in tone and select a color palette. Study how tone affects perception and depth of space.
Congratulations on your final assignment! In this module we bring the illustration to its final result and assemble the project.
Module result: Final illustration and assembled project.
We wish you inspiration and good luck!
Move on to the practice — develop the illustration: transfer it to a larger format, mark out the composition, work through the environment and refine the volumes.
Refine the final scene: analyze the illustration and determine what should be changed. Draw the characters and work through the details. Then assemble all the work into a portfolio format.
Want to create book illustrations but don't know where to start? Not sure how to turn text into an image, build scenes and make the story read naturally? This course gives you exactly what's missing — the ability to think like an illustrator.
We will take Little Red Riding Hood — a familiar story that lets you focus on visual decisions rather than coming up with a plot. Three modules. A concrete result. No fluff.
In the first module you will break down the structure of a book and understand how text becomes a spread. You will create two characters — Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf — and learn to convey personality through silhouette, proportions and expressions. In the second module you will build the visual sequence of the story, draw a storyboard of 6 scenes with alternating shots and rhythms, and select a tonal and color solution. In the third module you will bring the illustration to its final result: composition, environment, volume, detailing — and assemble everything into a complete project.
By the end of the course you will have a finished piece: characters, a storyboard of 6 scenes and a final illustration — a complete book project ready to add to your portfolio.
