The things you can build on the blockchain are endless. You can create your own NFTs, Tokens, and even your own metaverse. For this course we will be focused on the Ethereum blockchain. We aren’t going to go into too much nitty gritty details since our goal is to give you a high level overview of what it is like developing in this emerging ecosystem.
How can we guarantee that you own this apple? How can we guarantee the quality of apples that you have? And more importantly, how can we guarantee that you didn’t copy and paste the image of the Apples 10 times to claim you have 10 apples (known as the double spending problem)? Who will audit the transactions of the apple to verify these claims? How can we ensure that your friend won’t go back in time and edit your transaction to claim you sent them a 100 apples instead of one?
These are some of the core issues that the blockchain aims to solve.
At its core the blockchain records and keeps track of transactions in a digital ledger (think of it as a massive database of everyone sending and receiving money(cryptocurrencies) and other digital assets (NFTs, Smart Contracts). Now here’s where the Block comes in: Blockchain.
This functionality allows a level of anonymity on the blockchain since your name won’t be revealed in the ledger but rather a hash of your wallet that stores your crypto currency and NFTs.
The Chain in blockchain comes in because these blocks are cryptographically linked together with the hashes. The current block will have the hash of the previous block, and the next block will have the block chain of the previous block and so on. If anything is changed on one block, the other blocks become invalidated.
This adds an extra layer of security and prevents the double spend problem. It is important to know that it also creates immutability meaning once something is posted to the blockchain it cannot be undone.
Welcome to the start of your journey to become a blockchain developer. The things you can build on the blockchain are endless. You can create your own NFTs, Tokens, and even your own metaverse. For all the hype around NFT’s, blockchain, and cryptocurrencies it
