This is an introduction with a short overview of what you will learn throughout this course, an investigation where this modality comes from, and an explanation how this is different from the useful, though more superficial ways of classifying personality types.
Welcome video outlining what you will learn
Where Bioenergetics comes from
The difference between Bioenergetics and "Personality types"
Bioenergetics was inspired as a response to the mental and emotional focus of psychoanalysis.
We talk about how Bioenergetics differs from descriptions of personality traits, mainly due to its ability to describe exactly how and why the traits are formed.
We talk about what causes a blueprint to form a structure. Structures are formed from before we are born until the approximate age of 7 years old. They are results from developmental trauma, ways in which we were not able to experience love and the freedom of being ourselves fully.
Here we introduce the five blueprints that give rise to the five basic structures of bioenergetics and see when they are all formed. In the provided pictures you can see the physical silhouettes of the structures.
Have someone take pictures of you standing in your underwear without posing. Take
a picture from the front,
one from the back,
one from each side,
and one from the side where you put your fists into the lower part of your back and lean back making an arch.
Then observe them, going through all body parts and write down what comes to minds and what it makes you think of.
Example:
I look like I am holding my breath.
My legs seem very thin compared to my body.
I have a sad expression.
The arch looks broken in two places.
etc...
Before learning about the schizoid do this exercise and write down what you feel. You will need another person to play your mother.
Instructions for the mother: Hold your baby in your arms but be filled with hatred and bitterness. Look down at the baby with that feeling.
Instructions for you as the baby: You are only a few months old, full of love and curiosity wanting to connect with your mother.
Write down how this makes you feel and pay attention to sensations in the different parts of your body.
The schizoid structure is based on rejection, which generates a state of terror and fear for ones life. This strong fear becomes frozen in the body.
The separation that occurs in the subconscious is that between Needs and Survival. It is one or the other, not both.
In this lecture we talk about how the schizoid tends to be more in their head, and may develop an intellectual ability. It also disassociates from emotions.
By imagining a sensation of terror we can start to feel how the energy flow in the schizoid body is blocked. This is a low energy structure and the energy is mostly frozen in the chest and belly area.
Working with the schizoid it is important to create a feeling of being welcome here, fitting in, being of value. In the resources you will find a 20 minute relaxation, meditation, and affirmation session with binural beats that can help reduce the distance between Survival and Needs. Because the recording has binural beats it is important to listen to it with headphones.
In this exercise you will need another person to play your caretaker, a mother or father figure.
Instructions for the caretaker: Accept you child but do not give it what it wants. Be there but refrain from giving it what it wants. If the child wants a hug say that you are busy or cannot right now. If it wants attention, put your attention on something else and make up an excuse, etc.
Instructions for you, the 2 year old: Interact with your caretaker wanting to do different things and pay attention to how the interaction makes you feel emotionally and in the body.
Write down your observations.
The basis for the oral structure is abandonment, but not rejection. It creates a feeling of lack.
The separation of the oral becomes between Needs and Independence. They long for independence but subconsciously believe that if they get it they will not get their needs met.
The oral structure is centred around a feeling of lack. There is a feeling of a black hole in the chest that can never be filled. The structure develops an indirect way of asking for more and more.
This is a low energy structure that avoids contact with the surroundings and retracts energy from its extremities and eyes, thus becomes often myopic. Its head moves in front of the body creating a C-shaped spine when seen from the side.
Grounding and connecting with the surroundings in a comfortable and safe way is key for the success of this structure. It needs to be able to feel love and loved from the inside. One can also work on reducing the underlying separation between Needs and Independence. To that end there is a 20 minute relaxation, meditation, and affirmation session called "Loved" with binural beats.
The psychopath exercise requires one more person who agrees to play your mother or father.
Instructions for the caretaker: Show your child off to others. Make the child perform just so that you can look good, even if the child wants to do something else, try to make the child perform (sing, play, tell a poem, dance, etc).
Instructions for you (a 2-3 year old): Act as a normal child and see what the situation evokes in you.
Write down how you feel emotionally and in your body.
The psychopath arises as a response to being used and betrayed. It decides to take charge, be in control, so that it will never be used again.
The separation of the psychopath is between Independence and Closeness. Opening up and being close to someone is a challenge as the psychopath needs to be in control and closeness is seen as the opposite.
The psychopath ends us depending on its head and is excellent at repressing emotions. It is a structure that feels the need to control others, so that they will not use or betray it. It has a hard time with empathy and putting itself in the emotional shoes of others. And so it often misses the emotional aspects of what is going on.
This is a high energy structure. Most of the energy is high up in the body, especially the head. The head is held high, too high, leading to tensions. The chest is often inflated and the shape of the body tends to be triangular, where the hips are small and tight and the legs become thinner and thinner the closer to the feet it comes.
The psychopath needs to learn how to let go so that it can get in touch with the feelings. One can work on reducing the distance between Independence and Closeness. Here you are provided a 20 relaxation, mediation, and affirmation session called "Surrender" that focuses on that.
Again you will need someone to play the caretaker.
Instructions for the caretaker (father/mother): You have a dominant and self-sacrificing attitude. Try to make your child eat by manipulating it emotionally, making it feel guilty if it does not. Then try to make the child poop.
Instructions for you (2-3 year old): See how you feel in the situation.
Write down your emotions and physical sensations.
The masochist is formed based on humiliation and guilt. It is told it has everything and guilted into never becoming free.
The separation of the masochist is between Closeness and Freedom. They feel that in order to be close to someone they cannot go away and do what they are inspired to.
This structure learns how to endure hardship and is capable of going through a lot. It has an underlaying, often unconscious, anger that shows up as provocations of others. It connects with others by complaining about things.
This is also a high energy structure that packs the energy densely and this leads to a larger body with large, tense muscles and an ability to gain weight easily. The more unexpressed anger the easier it is to gain weight.
It is important for the masochist to learn to say "no" and follow their inner desires. The relaxation, meditation, and affirmation session is called "Follow Your Intuition" and helps bridge the gap between Closeness and Freedom.
The rigid structure is formed due to a rejection of its sexual nature. This is not as deep a rejection as the schizoid, whose entire being is being rejected.
The separation of the rigid is between Freedom and Surrender to Love. It is also between the heart and sex. The rigid can be free and have all the sex it wants, but then it will not be able to feel and get love.
The rigid structure is not accepted fully and so it cannot exist as itself. Instead it seeks perfections and creates an image that it tends to live up to. There may be elements of competition, obsession, and pride. This structure does not want to show when it is hurt.
The substructures depend on if the child was allowed to express anger and hatred at home or not. Based on this four different substructures are formed, the male and female version that express anger and the male and female versions that are more submissive.
The degree of rigidity in the body can vary. In general the rigid bodies are attractive and harmonious. The energy is allowed to flow through them although they tend to have some issues. Their hips will be pulled back, in a duck-like position.
In treating the rigid it is important to reconnect the upper and lower parts of the body. When they can hear and believe that they are loved just the way they are it becomes a transformative affirmation. You are given a 20 minute relaxation, meditation, and affirmation session entitled "Surrender to Love".
Now that you have learned about all the basic structures it is time to put your knowledge into practice. Take the pictures you have of yourself standing in your underwear and analyse them based on what you have learned and try to identify your active structures.
Then do the online test I have developed and see if it coincides with your own findings. You will find the test here:
http://stayonthehealthtrack.com/bioenergetic-character-analysis-test/
In the resources you will find an outline of the silhouettes of all of the structures. Try to draw where you find the main tensions in all of the structures.
There is also a picture of the tensions already drawn, so that you can check your drawing, but do not start by downloading answers, try remembering, thinking and drawing them for yourself first.
In this video we are talking about the when the schizoid feels certain emotions and what causes them. Pause the video at each question and try to answer it for yourself first, based on what you learned about the schizoid.

In real life we are all mixtures of different character structures. In this video we talk about how some types of structures are more prevalent in some countries and how different structures layer on top of each other.
Once we realize that most of the times we are reacting negatively to something we are seeing it through our trauma filter we can start choosing different interpretations, ones more aligned with the actual present moment.
It is important to realize and deeply know that we are not our structures. We are beyond the reactive patterns that we often use. Realising this we can start to identify more with our essence, and this is our spiritual nature. By identifying with it we become more free.
Congratulations! You made it to the end!
Thank you so much for taking this course. Hopefully it brought you some useful information.
To learn more I have created a short list of a few books that will take you deeper into the understanding of Bioenergetics. If you only read one of them I recommend the one entitled "Bioenergetics" by Alexander Lowen.
If there is a lot of interest we can create a second course where we go deeper into Bioenergetics and learn to use it more. Let me know if you would be interested.
Thank you for participating!
Bioenergetics, as developed by Alexander Lowen, is the instruction manual to how you work. Finding out how your subconscious mind has been influenced by developmental trauma you can start to work with the foundations, the cause, or origin of what you experience as difficulties in your present everyday life.
This means that you do not need to fight the many consequences of an inner misalignment but can actually work on re-aligning the basics and all the problematic areas will realign as the base realigns. So, for instance, you do not need a separate strategy for trying to lose weight, another for learning to take on less responsibilities, another for dealing with demanding relatives, yet another for feeling overwhelmed and depressed. All of these have the same origin. Working with the basic separation you automatically work with all these areas.
Understanding how you and others work makes it possible to create more harmonious relationships.
Learning the mechanics of how you work also frees you up from identifying with them. Mechanics are not your essence. Seeing how you work you get the choice of not reacting automatically but creating consciously. You now become free to let your inner creativity flow effortlessly, not through automated processes decided in childhood.
Stopping to identify with defence mechanisms we open up to greater spiritual growth.
The basics of Bioenergetics is essential knowledge for anyone interested in self-improvement, improved relationships with others as well as spiritual growth.
Some skills you will learn:
Read people,
Interact in efficient ways they can relate to,
Recognise when you are blinded by past traumas,
Know how to transform negative experiences you create due to past trauma so that you are able to be in the present - here and now,
No longer identify with self defence mechanisms,
Allow for the realisation of your highest potential: By opening up to your true essence and being yourself (not your defence mechanisms) and thus allowing your creativity to flow.
