Welcome to a core lesson in professional discipline. In this lecture, I'm sharing a manifesto of 21 principles that the game industry has hard-won for succeeding in game development. We'll start getting into the real-world mindset needed to build innovative games and healthy studios. This is a guided tour through the unwritten rules of the trade, designed to give you the foundational, professional wisdom to navigate your career. Think of this as the professional's code for sustainable success. Notes: When researching and collecting these pet peeves, I was on a mission to learn from the success of the game industry's early foundations. When I said "hard-won", I mean that the game industry went through a lot of ups and downs to become successful. I felt that these were important not only for myself to learn and strive to embody, but that it's important for everyone getting into the game industry. It is believed that the game industry's current issues stem from a forgetfulness and abandonment of these principles in their current success and immediate monetary returns.

Goes through the copyright and attributions of creative works.
Important Note: The downloadable PowerPoint slide has more imagery in comparison to the video lecture. It also contains, on slide 9, an AI Copyright Notice that you should use on your own documents if you're AI-augmented like me. Use that exact wording, only replacing my name with yours and identifying the specific AI you've used in accordance with US copyright law. (If you are outside the USA, please research your nation's AI copyright laws and policies.)
Here are some additional links that relate to our topics we've discussed in this section.
A brief overview.

An introduction to Gemini Notebook (formerly Google’s NotebookLM, showing how to transform your provided course materials (not just the case studies and the 5 main design documents) into podcasts, summaries, and study aids. Experiment with NotebookLM to learn how this tool supports narrative game design education by making complex documents more accessible and engaging. Refer to the NotebookLM Student Guide.
Note: This is one of the very rare unscripted guides I've done, and it's the best version of the many retakes.
Defines case studies in game design and explains how to begin structured analysis before starting your projects.
NotebookLM's take on Crafting Worlds.
Hands‑on exercise using Discord to practice collaborative narrative design and team communication workflows. Designed to mimic remote work team collaboration.
This Guided Practice will set you on the path of creating your own Case Studies, and it will serve as a strong foundation to begin crafting the worlds you create.
For one of your case studies, I highly recommend analyzing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. While it has recently faced industry scrutiny regarding transparency in development, which resulted in the IGA's (Indie Game Awards) recindication of Sandfall Interactive's GOTY wins (That will be discussed in the next lectures), it remains an essential study for our mission. It perfectly embodies the technical goal of bridging the gap between AAA-quality and indie development, but it now also serves as a critical lesson in professional ethics and the importance of disclosure. We will deconstruct how they achieved such high production values while discussing the real-world consequences of undisclosed AI usage in the modern market.
Important Note on Document Completion: This case study template is designed as an iterative analysis tool that requires multiple review sessions. You'll begin by documenting your initial observations while playing through or studying a walkthrough of your chosen game. Subsequently, you'll conduct additional playthroughs/walkthroughs and research to fill knowledge gaps, refine your analysis, and deepen your understanding. This methodical approach aligns with the template's purpose of fostering comprehensive analysis and developing critical thinking skills that will serve you as you create your own games.
This mentions Sandfall Interactive's recent loss of two awards from the IGA. It serves as an example of what's currently going on within the industry.
This is the instructor-led slides on the controversial topic, and finishes off with the powerful question of "What If"?!

This course involves the use of artificial intelligence.
No prior experience required — this course guides you from zero to a complete narrative game design pipeline. Let's embark on a journey together to bridge AAA documentation standards with the Indie Game Developer Career Pathway, empowering you to create Professional-Grade Narrative Game Design Documentation. This course defines 'AAA Quality' not by the size of a studio’s bank account, but through the 'Mise en Place' discipline of structural rigor—preventing many problems during production with a master blueprint rather than trying to throw cash at them later. Essentially, it's a terminology transition from Capital-based definitions (how much money you have) to Craft-based definitions (how you use what you have).
Designed for self-taught developers and industry newcomers, this course is designed to be a complete, standalone foundation. It provides clear, step-by-step guidance through essential documentation and guided practice. Starting with industry terminology and foundational knowledge, to structured design documents, incorporating narrative analysis and practical scenarios. You will learn to treat documentation as a functional, technical schematic rather than a novel, ensuring any team member can find critical details within a minute. This course teaches The ShadowFox Framework: A streamlined, production-tested documentation pipeline engineered to give indie and solo developers AAA-level organizational discipline.
You'll learn the practical application of narrative game design, with a strong emphasis on high-quality, structured documentation that meets industry standards. This course uniquely addresses modern development realities, including the fundamentals of ethical AI usage and AAA to indie adaptation strategies. Each section builds systematically, ensuring a comprehensive understanding and the creation of portfolio-ready documentation.
This practical course empowers aspiring designers to create professional-quality documentation through a blend of theory and hands-on practice. You'll learn to craft A Case Study, followed by the five essential design documents: World Design Document (WDD), Narrative Game Design Document (NGDD), Mission Design Document (MDD), Level Design Document (LDD) & Story Bible. What sets this course apart is its focus on making AAA standards accessible to indie developers, combined with real-world scenarios addressing crucial industry challenges. While traditional AAA documents can be unreadably long, this course teaches a culinarian's synthetic version of 'AAA Discipline for Indie Survival'. You'll learn the ShadowFox Method to identify the essential load-bearing pillars of prestige-indie development—such as Narrative Gating, Variable Tracking, and Resource Triage—and scale them into slimmer, high-impact artifacts. By the end of this course, you'll possess the knowledge and a complete suite of portfolio-ready documents that bridge the gap between AAA standards and indie practicality. The Templates and Document Suite are downloadable assets. The lecture videos are a mix of my lecture presentations and notebooklm's shorter video overviews.
These documents meet the high-quality standards of the game industry, with the caveat that the actual quality of the output depends on your execution of what you have learned in this course.
Factors Determining the Final Quality of Your Work:
Student's Skill and Effort: The ShadowFox Templates provide a rigorous skeletal frame for your project, but the "soul" of the game—the emotionally resonant themes and unique creative voice—must come entirely from you. While the documentation process is hyper-accelerated, your ability to apply the foundational principles and their creative execution to achieve ludo-narrative harmony will determine if the resulting game feels like a cohesive masterpiece or a disjointed series of mechanics.
The World Architect's Sketch Philosophy: High-quality narrative design is a highly iterative journey. Your first goal is to 'sketch out' the entire game concept to lock in the logic. This complete initial draft is the only thing preventing a project from leaning or collapsing under its own weight when assets start being built.
Continued Refinement: This course provides the 'Mise en Place' (everything in its place) needed to get started. Excellence is achieved through the back-and-forth process of trying, refining, and understanding—turning your living skematics into a 'Grand Chronicle' of your universe.
Modern Development Realities: Learn to use AI as a 'Power Tool' for documentation acceleration, ensuring the Human Architect remains the undisputed source of the story’s soul while the machine handles the technical heavy lifting. This course provides you with the tools to get started, but continued refinement and feedback are vital for achieving excellence.

Practical Application.
Financial stability and creative freedom comes from ownership. It’s not about owning things. It’s about owning the underlying asset. In games, the underlying asset is the IP, not the code. And the IP lives in the documentation.
Studios know this.
Publishers know this.
Lawyers know this.
Writers know this.
Beginners usually never hear it.
You don’t truly own a game until you own its documentation — that’s where the real value lives, long before a single line of code or a single asset is created. Lastly, do not fear to use the modern tools (such as AI) of the times. They are meant to assist and augment your work, when used honestly and appropriately, not to replace you. This course prepares you for the critical part of the Pre-Production Phase in Game Development in your journey.
