What will you be making?
In this first video I introduce the items that you will be able to make when you have completed this course
In this video you learn just a little about me and my journey that has led me to this place of teaching this course on willow weaving.
In this video, I will be talking about willow and why it is so good for these type of making activities.
In this video I consider the types of material you may use to make these items and the usefulness of getting hold of some cultivated willow.
Here we look at one particular type of cultivated willow that is quite extensively available and how it is a useful one to use.
We look at setting up the frame to weave into. This can feel quite awkward to start with as you need to be able to hold the angle of the frames in place as you weave around, but you will soon get used to it.
This is the key video that identifies the progression of the figure of eight weave that fills the framework and gives the item its strength.
Here I show you how to insert the fresh sticks
Once the weave has been picked up and you are steaming ahead, you begin to reach where the frame sticks cross over, necessitating a slight change of tactics as you come up to this point. Here I lead you through this phase of the making process.
This video takes you through two methods of closing the weave so that there is no unravelling.
Some pointers on trimming up the excess lengths of stick from the finished article.
In this video I look at how different lengths and thicknesses of willow are used to create fish of different sizes.
In this video we will look at ways of experimenting with the materials used to create the fish and the kind of effects that can be achieved by mixing the willow with other weavable materials.
Here we look at the other willow items that can be made by making changes to the method of construction.
We look at how the weaving up to the crossing point is adapted to turn the design into a sword or dagger.
I run through the basic preparation I will use in readying for a group that will be learning this weave.
Learn to plait willow effectively, keeping the weave tight and gaps to a minimum.
This course is a beginning course for willow weaving. For many people the very first encounter they have with willow is making a willow fish and this is often enough to birth a love and passion for willow weaving that will last a lifetime. This can lead on to basketry and working with sculptural willow weaving. It could be a very long road that will take you far, but this course provides you with an excellent first step.
You will learn how to make these fish, leaves and other items by creating the necessary frames and filling them in with a repeated figure of eight weave. You will explore how the material within the body of the weave can be experimented with for different effects and textures.
Not only will you learn how to make leaves and fish and how to adapt the weave to make other items, but I will give you advice and useful information on teaching these skills to groups; if you are a school teacher, forest school leader, scout, cub or guide leader you will find this a very useful resource.
We look at cultivated willow and the sourcing of materials from the wild to help get you going, and a little at how to prepare and use these materials.
Trust me, once you start weaving, you won’t want to stop.
