A Beginner’s Guide to Data Visualization Design
What you'll learn
- Plan what results to include when presenting data to an audience.
- Craft a compelling story with said data.
- Identify which types of visualizations are best for different kinds of data.
- Determine which software or platform to use to create visualizations.
- Successfully create simple and clean visualizations using any software or language.
- Wow your coworkers with beautiful visualizations like social networks, heat maps and take your bar charts to the next level.
- Know the inside scoop on various visualization tools like D3, Tableau and R.
Requirements
- You should have previously worked with data using at least a spreadsheet software like google sheets or excel.
- The curiosity to learn about different kinds of data visualizations.
- Beyond that, this course has no additional prerequisites.
Description
In this course we will walk through how to develop a story with your visualizations, how to identify the right visualization for your needs and we’ll introduce some of the most current visualization software and programming languages. By the end of this course you’ll be able to:
Plan what results to include when presenting data to an audience
Craft a compelling story with said data
Identify which types of visualizations are best for different kinds of data
Determine which software or platform to use to create visualizations
Successfully create simple and clean visualizations using any software or language
You’ll also be able to:
Wow your coworkers with beautiful visualizations like social networks, heat maps and take your bar charts to the next level
Know the inside scoop on various visualization tools like D3.js, Tableau and R
To help solidify what you learn they’ll be various course activities for you to practice the concepts covered ranging from making sure your data is ready to be visualized to deconstructing a graph and removing unnecessary information. At the end of the course there will be an assignment where you will create from scratch a self-contained visualization of your choosing. Oh and don’t forget that the visualization will need to be engaging and understandable. But don’t worry, we’ll walk through every step together so that by the end of the course you’ll be able to wow your managers and colleagues with the most current visualization techniques. Sound fun? Then let’s get started!!
Who this course is for:

Instructor
Hello, my name is Alexandra. Most recently I was a data scientist at Udemy and I spent a lot of time making visualizations that helped power this product. I’ve made countless visualizations ranging from the simplest of bar charts to more complex interactive visualizations. I’ve also seen many visualizations made by coworkers who were data scientists, business intelligence analysts, product managers, sales - and a whole range of other job titles. Over the years I’ve noticed that there are a lot of simple things that people can do to their graphs and charts that can make them more legible and ultimately more convincing. And I want to show you how to do just that.
I made this course because I wanted to share with the world what effective data visualization means. I wanted to share my on-the-job experience as well as the theory I learned at Columbia University where I received my Master’s in Quantitative Methods. For those of you who are relatively new to data visualization or who might feel a little intimidated, know that I was just like you not too long ago. Believe it or not, I too was a newb once (and anyone who tells you differently is lying). By sharing common mistakes and best practices that I have seen over my career my hope is to empower everyone to make awesome visualizations.
