In this preview, i provide insights on what is going to come in the course and what students will learn and able to do after the end of course as new cockatiel owners or bird parent. When you first bring your cockatiel home, it’s completely normal for them to feel nervous. Remember — in their world, you’re a giant, and they need time to learn that you’re a friend, not a threat.

The best way to start is by simply being near them — talk softly, move slowly, and let them watch you.

Spend a few minutes each day just sitting by their cage, reading or talking gently. Over time, your bird will start to associate you with calm, positive experiences.

  • Introduction and Set up Home for your Bird - Cage and Toys5:23

Welcome to Beginner Cockatiel Care! If you’ve ever wanted to own a cockatiel or you’re a new bird parent, this course is designed just for you. Cockatiels are intelligent, affectionate, and playful companions, but like any pet, they need proper care to thrive.

The initial part of the video you hear me talking. Then there is no talk from me and only observations to be made by students to keenly observe the cage setup with birds.

  • Bird Behavior4:46

Cockatiels are social, intelligent, and highly expressive birds. Observing and understanding their behavior is key to building a strong bond and providing proper care.

    1. Crest Communication

The crest or tuft which is common called for group of feathers or hairs on top of a cockatiel’s head is like a mood indicator:

    • Upright: Alert, curious, or excited.

    • Half-raised: Relaxed, calm, or slightly curious.

    • Flicking or bobbing: Paying attention to sounds or showing interest.

Note: I have never seen Flatenned against head a sign for scared, threated or annoyed in my bird.

    2. Vocalizations

Cockatiels use a variety of sounds to communicate:

    • Chirps and whistles: Usually happy or content.

    • Squawks or loud calls: Can indicate stress, fear, or a need for attention.

As on date my bird has not mimiced any sound. Cocktiel can mimic sound. If your bird is mimicing a sound, thats great! cheers.

    3. Body Language

    • Fluffed feathers: Relaxed or sleepy; can also indicate illness if persistent.

    • Wing stretching: Normal exercise or stretching after sleep.

    • Beak grinding: Shows contentment, often before sleep.

    • Tail wagging: Often a sign of happiness or excitement.

    4. Social & Playful Behavior

    • Cockatiels are highly social and enjoy interaction with humans and other birds.

    • They may preen you gently or nuzzle as a sign of affection.

    • Toys, mirrors, and swings are great for mental stimulation.

    5. Signs of Stress or Discomfort

    • Aggression (biting or lunging)

    • Feather plucking or over-preening, normally bird will do preening as its there natural behavior.

    • Excessive screaming or withdrawal

Note: My bird has never shown signs of stress or discomfort.

Understanding these behaviors helps you respond appropriately, strengthen your bond, and ensure your cockatiel remains happy, healthy, and stress-free.

  • Feeding your Bird9:40

Feeding your cockatiel the right foods is one of the most important parts of keeping it healthy and happy. In this lecture, you’ll learn exactly what your cockatiel should eat every day, what foods to avoid, and how to create a balanced diet that supports long-term well-being.

    In this video, you’ll learn:

    • The key components of a balanced cockatiel diet: shown in this video sunflower seeds and millets

    • Safe, nutritious treats and foods to avoid (like avocado, chocolate, caffeine, and salty snacks)

    • You must avoid foods like avocado, caffeine and salty snacks to your bird. No human consumed beverages.

    • Provide clean water and calcium sources daily. I have observed that my birds when they are put back in cage they go to the water source and drink.

  • Finger Training Step up5:34

    Why Step Up is Important

    • Helps safely move your cockatiel in and out of its cage

    • Builds trust between you and your bird

    • Forms the foundation for other tricks and training

    Step-by-Step Guide

    1. Gain your bird’s trust

      • Speak softly and move slowly around your cockatiel.

      • Offer treats to encourage positive association.

    2. Present your finger

      • Gently place your finger near the bird’s lower chest or belly.

      • Avoid sudden movements that might startle it.

    3. Use a cue or command

      • Say a simple word like “Step up” while encouraging the bird.

    4. Reward immediately

      • When your cockatiel steps onto your finger, offer a treat or gentle praise.

      • Positive reinforcement helps the bird learn quickly.

    5. Practice consistently

      • Short, frequent sessions (5–8 minutes) work better than long sessions.

      • Repeat daily until the bird reliably steps up on command.

    Tips for Success

    • Never force your cockatiel; patience is key.

    • Avoid scolding or punishing mistakes — it can harm trust.

    • Keep training sessions calm and relaxed.

By mastering the Step Up command, students will be able to safely handle their cockatiel, strengthen the bond, and prepare for further training or playtime.

  • Final Lesson: Hand feeding and Bonding6:51

Practice hand-feeding and bonding methods that help your cockatiel grow confident and affectionate around you. A perfect way to end your journey toward a happy, trusting pet.
