By the end of this course, you’ll learn that you have far more control over your career than you think you do and what things you need to think about in order to make it as a writer.
In this module, we’ll be discussing the first limiting belief writers have: I just need to get my script in the right hands. Believe it or not, this belief is doing tremendous damage to you and your opportunities in the world of screenwriting.
Now you understand it’s not about getting your script in the right hands. Your new belief is I need to write a screenplay so good people that want to share it with others. That’s how you get ahead. In this module, we’ll be exploring the second limiting belief writers have: I need to get a Showrunner attached. This one might seem contrary to a lot of advice on the Internet, but it, too, is holding you back from the success you want. Let’s dive in.
In the last module, we discussed a common misconception (and bad advice) that your career relies on one task: getting a showrunner attached. Not only is this not true, but it is holding you back from success. Instead, you learned to replace that belief with the reality that your script is a writing sample, and the most important thing you can do is make sure it is well written. The good news: is that it is 100% in your control. In this next module, we’ll tackle the third limiting belief that is holding you back. That being said, in this next module, I’m going to decimate a common excuse writers use to avoid writing. Buckle up.
I’m betting that last one was a bit of a surprise. Most emerging writers spend far more time trying to get an agent or a manager than they do learning how to write a great script. Now you know that even if you had an agent, it doesn’t mean you’ll have a career. Agents don’t want you to succeed; they want you to make them succeed. That shouldn’t be a downer; that should be incredibly freeing.
In this fourth module, I’m going to help you break down one of the most common excuses writers use to avoid writing. Buckle up; this one might sting a little.
Writer’s block isn’t a luxury you can afford if you want to be a professional writer. You are paid to produce work. Not feeling like it isn’t going to fly with your boss or the studio when you’re supposed to turn in notes.
In this next module, we’ll discuss a topic I get asked about all of the time, and odds are, you’ve thought about yourself.
You need to understand Those four powerful things to make it in Hollywood.
