Being a youth sports coach is one of the most rewarding and challenging pursuits we can have in life. We want to help children enjoy and learn in an organized fashion. Watching them smile, move and execute what we teach gratifying and honorable. Often time parents will praise us for a job well done. But, while this does happen unfortunately far too often parents criticize either to our faces (rarely) or to others (often). We see the joy everyone has when our team wins. So we will try our best to make everyone happy with our efforts. Winning is the mark of a Coach that everyone wants to play for, right?

The truth is whether you are a Parent or a Sports coach we all have great intentions. We want the best for the children, and we put our best effort in what we do. While very few youth sports coaches get paid, primarily those "Specialization Pros" who may make a living off coaching kids, the vast majority volunteer their time. Most in fact 85% are parents of a child on the team. Many see these people as, "Angels of service". And of course the toughest most unappreciated job on the planet is that of a parent. No pay and lots of pain, but there are bless moments too. In fact all these adults will have blessed moments and will have touched the heart and minds of many they teach. But while we are trying to do our best, the effort alone doesn't assure that the best is what is being given to the children.

According a number of long term credible research studies (they will be featured in this course) well over 30% of children will not play the same sport again. About 70% will quit playing all organized sports after a few seasons which typically happens between age 11 & 13. The reason why they quit have everything to do in the way we run youth sports and they way we coach kids. Bottom line is that most kids don’t what to play for the coach they had and after they have experienced a few misguided coaches they assume all coaches (which is mostly true) will coach in the same way, so they quit.

From the child's perspective than parents and coaches have removed the reason they wanted to play sports to begin with which is that we have destroyed FUN. We have destroyed FAIRNESS! We have Destroyed FUNDAMENTALS! All these things are what kids want from coaches and we have collectively failed to provided to them what will keep them wanting to play. I highlighted from the child's perspective for a reason. Because it is here that research tells us we are failing children.

Sports Coaching has to change! Most kids don't want to play for the coaches they have, they are not the coach that everyone wants to play for! The current and accepted methods of coaching are destroying the foundation for future generations. Numbers don't lie. Sports Participation is trending down. For those that quit life becomes more difficult on average compared to those that continue. 98% of kids that drop out of high school don't play organized sports as teenagers. 95% of executives in fortune 500 companies played organized sports after puberty. Teens that continue to play, do better in school, do better in careers, do better in relationships, are healthier and happier. Yet, we are coaching in a way that is causing children to leave sports, creating a drop out environment rather that a success environment.

LTAD & SDS Youth Coaching be the best coach possible! course is designed to help coaches keep kids in the game. Become a real winning coach, The Coach that Wins at the game of life. The Coach that everyone remembers, loves and wants to play for again and again.

10 elements of Youth Sports

This lecture goes into what the current culture and methods of coaching is doing and if we were to place a grade on their effectiveness what the grade would be.

Current Grade

Here we begin to bridge into the next section, highlighting some of what we will discuss in the coming videos. We need to know our past. In that way we can evaluate what we've done good, bad and ugly.

How We Got Here
+ History
8 lectures 52:21

This lecture talks about a man that deserves far more credit than he has received. The innovator and inspiration behind many things we simply take for granted. And the designing of a model that was the first sports model and one that never got recognized

Luther Gulick

This lecture goes into the Gulick Model and how it fit into the culture of the day during the guild-ing years "golden" years of America. This model would be the cap placed upon the head of 50+ years of Organized Youth Sports Circa 1865-1920's

The First Model

The model shift circa 1920's-1970's, The great expansion and the focus of sports changes as we look at new leadership in Youth Sports.

Winning Focused

Circa 1970's via the USSR and the 1990's with a study to challenge eugenics and the 2000's with Malcolm Gladwell expansion on Anders Ericsson's study that supported specialization as a means to achieve elite performance. The timeline continues as we look and how these events along with Winning Focused programs create the culture of today.

One of many psychologist with scientific research backing up theories about how children develop and what we should be exposing our children to as they mature. Havighurst's model was more detailed than Gulick's and could be the first of the many that would follow that lead to the LTAD model.

Robert Havighurst

A idea that has the backing of many researchers that study the impacts of sports on children featuring the YSI. The Youth Sports Institute out of Michigan State University determines that Diversification is a better approach to Youth Sports.

A brief overview of what the LTAD is! This is one of the two keys needed to help you as a coach to become the coach that everyone wants to play for.

While the LTAD is magnificent it doesn't explain how to do what needs to be done practice to practice, game to game. The SDS is the additive that is missing from the LTAD. This lecture gives and overview that both the LTAD and the SDS will have entire sections dedicated to greater explanation!

+ Developmental AGE
6 lectures 26:11

This lecture begins a series of lecture than exposes the failings of how we determine maturity in a growing human. We begin with the very common calendar age aka the Chronological age.

Chronological Age

This lecture continues with exposing the truth about the "natural age" of a child by looking at the timing of when we are born within one calendar year and how months of time can greatly impact the experience, ability and opportunity given to humans in sports.

Relative AGE

Another one of the several "age" considerations that is often not seen in proper context when we look at capability of the masses.

Experience AGE

This looks at the "skeleton age" or "bone age" or Biological age of a child and the broad range that can occur from child to child in what is often referred to as the maturation age.

Biological AGE

In this lecture we distinguish the differences between biological and maturation ages in a different light that many established schools of practice. To discern one from the other we look at biological and the physical side of maturity and Maturation as the mental and emotional development of the mind. We can say biology is the brain and maturation is the mind.

Maturation AGE

Here we put all the pieces together in a grand formula designed to help us be closer to knowing the "true, natural age of a person" this is the best way to place individuals into groups where they are challenged appropriately and in a way that helps them develop emotionally strong and mentally tough.

Natural or Developmental AGE
+ Cognition Tower
5 lectures 42:50

This section begins with the youngest level of the cognitive function. We will not be coaching children this age but we can still learn why it is that some children act the way they do. Each level will bring lessons that are brought into greater levels and having an understanding of where our players have been can help us to guide them moving forward.

In the level we may have some of our players beginning their sports participation and this level is a place that all humans may revisit with their behavior when emotions take over their behavior. We examine this to gain insights on how we can deal with a pre-school level behaving person.

This level is where the vast majority of children will begin playing sports. We will look at what they are thinking and feeling and where they are focused in their mindset. Knowing this will help us connect better with them and in turn make us become the coach that everyone wants to play for.

School Age

This will be the second most common age we will be dealing with, even if we are coaching adults this level is pretty common. What is going on in the mind of a person at this level and how we can connect with them to get the most from them and have them want to be coached by us more.

Here we will talk about coaching peers and how they will differ from all the other levels, while at the same time they too can slip back into and emotional driven state resulting in lower level behavior.

Young Adult
7 lectures 52:17

In the is section we will break down each stage of the LTAD beginning with the youngest of children, 0-5 years of age. What should they be doing and more are covered in this lecture.

Active Start

The next stage up in where most kids will begin playing sports. We will look at what we should be focusing on to help them develop and enjoy playing sports.

This step take us up to the next stage where we continue with what we have been doing but more of our attention moves towards skills

Learning to Play

The progression continues as we break down more of what we add to what we have been already coaching

Training to Play

Competition is looked at really for the first time at this level but are focus will be on refinement of skills and positional learning and practice as we narrow down our choices of sport to just one or two.

Training to Compete

This is high level competition, what we need to do as coaches at this level. Everything expands, specialization extends to both players and coaches

Training to WIN

To goal that everyone can obtain. This lecture is the best plan B available. We look at how this goal is what we should all hope to achieve in order to remain healthy and happy in life.

Active for LIFE
6 lectures 48:36

Now we are into the how to portion of the course. In the first lesson we look at "labels" how they impact the players and their motivation to continue or not.

Breaking Labels

This lesson goes into getting everyone on board with the LTAD and how we can change the culture from winning games to winning in life with this holistic and community, family approach to coaching young children.

Unified Team

We will still need to group our children in teams of ability. This lesson speaks about the first of three groups beginning with the one that recognizes late bloomers and newbies to sports.

Rising Stars

While we will have newbies and late bloomers, in any group you'll have those on the other end of the spectrum as well. and also those that fall somewhere in the middle of these two extremes. This lecture speaks to this middle group.

Shining Stars

Early bloomers, more experienced will be in this group to start as will be the case with all the children. each of these beginning designations are merely to have a starting point of equal and fair learning

Bright Stars

Now we understanding the grouping we will need a means to keep kids properly challenged as each will undoubtedly progress at different rates. Star Flow speaks to the fluidity of SDS and how moving the players around is the design of the system. Cycles within each group and movement between groups by those needing more balanced challenges.

Star Flow
+ Adults
7 lectures 01:09:53

We now have a system and now we will need to deal with individuals and their behaviors. The ME elevator is featured in this lecture as a means to get on the same level as your player.

ME Elevator

This lecture talks about the players point of view, what they are experiencing and how knowing this can help you connect better with your player so that you can be that coach that everyone wants to play for

Child's View

We all have needs. This lectures spells out the needs of your player. Giving them what they need will help you become that coach that everyone wants to play for.

Child's Needs

This lesson looks at what a coach should be focused on, building an athlete first, skills second and all the time FUN and of course Safety.

ABC's Foremost

In this lecture we will look at research done that proves that the vast majority of children simply wish to play. Winning is not that important and we will look at a few of the studies to support this truth.

Playing over Winning

This lecture helps to set the moral stage required for any coach that wants to be the coach everyone wants to play for.

Equality in every-way

This lecture talks about what we say and how we say it that makes all the difference in the world for players to receive the lessons and training they get from a coach they want to play for.
