Become a Registered CNA

Welcome to my course on Becoming a Registered CNA. This course is tailored to help students break into the field of medicine by becoming CNAs. The course has the following 6 objectives and follows this syllabus format as described below -

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate essential CNA skills (vital signs, bathing, feeding, etc.)

2. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare staff

3. Ensure patient safety and infection control

4. Provide compassionate care in a variety of healthcare settings

5. Understand legal and ethical responsibilities of a CNA

6. Pass the state competency evaluation for CNA certification

Curriculum Outline:

Module 1: Introduction to Healthcare (5 hours)

• Role and responsibilities of a CNA

• Interdisciplinary healthcare teams

• Legal and ethical principles

• HIPAA and patient rights

Module 2: Communication and Interpersonal Skills (5 hours)

• Verbal and non-verbal communication

• Cultural sensitivity

• Reporting and documentation

• Working with dementia patients

Module 3: Infection Control (6 hours)

• Standard precautions

• Hand hygiene and PPE

• Isolation procedures

• Controlling the spread of infection

Module 4: Safety and Emergency Procedures (6 hours)

• Body mechanics and patient positioning

• Fire safety and disaster plans

• Fall prevention

• Emergency response (CPR overview)

Module 5: Personal Care Skills (15 hours)

• Bathing, grooming, dressing

• Toileting and incontinence care

• Nutrition and feeding techniques

• Bedmaking and linen changes

Module 6: Basic Nursing Skills (15 hours)

• Taking and recording vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure)

• Assisting with mobility (transfers, ambulation, ROM exercises)

• Height and weight measurement

• Specimen collection and intake/output tracking

Module 7: Mental Health and Social Needs (5 hours)

• Psychological support and mental well-being

• Managing challenging behaviors

• Understanding developmental stages and aging

Module 8: Care of the Dying Patient (3 hours)

• End-of-life care

• Palliative care principles

• Grief support

Module 9: Clinical Skills Lab (10–20 hours)

• Hands-on practice of all CNA skills

• Simulations and peer feedback

• Preparation for skills exam

  
  

Assessment and Grading:

• Written Exams/Quizzes: 30%

• Skills Performance Checklists: 30%

• Clinical Evaluation: 30%

• Attendance/Participation: 10%

Passing Requirements:

• Minimum 75% on written exams

• Competent rating on all required clinical skills

• Completion of required hours
