Walter Williams Jr., longtime tour bowler and PGA tour money leader and titleholder, shares tricks learned from clinics with amateur bowlers and USPC to help you become a better bowler.
Develop a relaxed fingertip grip with a molded thumb and a sized thumb hole for better control. Use tape and a cork insert to customize fit, accommodating arthritis and comfort.
Learn the bowling targeting system using lane arrows and dots about 15 feet away to predict ball path, adjust for hook, and improve spare accuracy.
Master hand releases to throw the ball straighter and improve spares, using an underhand spiral or a straight release with the thumb aligned and fingers pointed.
Adopt an athletic stance with a forward lean and the ball close to your body, then master the one- and two-step drills and progress to three- to five-step tempo deliveries.
Aim for the pocket and refine your shot by adjusting foot placement and target to hit the headpin and the 1-3 pocket, improving consistency.
read lane oil and friction, adjust feet and target to hit the intended line, and find the pocket by playing the lanes with precise, repeatable shots across conditions.
Record a side-view video to diagnose timing and body movement. Compare your arm and leg positions and ensure the ball starts on time, finishing with the last steps.
Learn the two-handed release to generate more hook and speed, often without a thumb, while noting that two extra weight holes make it illegal; practice and throw spares straight.
Throw the ball straight to maximize spares, creating room for air, and learn consistent targets and starting positions for common spares and splits.
Practice with tough conditions to sharpen accuracy, keep score to target improvements, and drill spares. Build warmups, home and tournament practice, and steady shot timing.
Develop a positive outlook, manage nerves, and focus on the target to improve performance and use non successes as a way to move on and do better.
