Throughout my career I held various roles from Service Desk Manager to Vice President of IT Service Management and Control in various industries like Oil & Gas, Investment Banking, IT Consulting and Pharmaceuticals to name a few.
I realized early on how import data was as well as the importance of how it is presented.
My first Microsoft Excel Dashboard (built in 2003) helped to save an IT Help Desk staff from staff reductions simply by presenting upper management a dashboard report that told a compelling story with data. The executives were able to determine the cost vs benefit impact to the business, as a result zero Help Desk staff were laid off and from that point forward I would go on to build many dashboards to quantify, measure and validate the performance of teams, departments, processes and organizations.
I have been building Excel dashboards since 2003. My approach is simple, the data should tell a story, it should be easily gathered, automatically formatted and dynamically presented to enable analyst to quickly find answers to questions including forecasting and tracking trends. In addition, the dashboard should provide you with automated commentary where applicable.
I’m ITIL certified and my focus is around it Service Management but the things you will learn in my courses can be used in most dashboard solutions.
