Learning to beatbox is a lifelong journey. After hundreds of thousands of years on this planet, we are still learning new jaw-dropping sounds that we can create with our voice. When it comes to beatboxing, we have to start with 3 crucial sounds. Let's introduce them!
The first sound we are going to learn is the 'Bass Drum'. On a regular acoustic drum-kit, this is the big round drum that sits on the floor in front of the drummer. When the drummer hits the foot pedal, a beater will hit the skin of the drum to make the Bass Drum sound - 'B'.
The Hi Hat has to be the easiest beatbox sound to make. On a drum kit, the hi hat is the part with 2 cymbals one on top of the either and they can open and close. Just as a drummer needs a hi hat to play a nice groove, it's a very important beatbox sound too.
There are lots of different snare sounds we can use as beatboxers. The first one we are going to learn is the simple 'K Snare' - 'K'. The snare drum is the drum that sits right in front of the drummer and the skin of the drum is horizontal. The snare drum does not have a foot pedal.
Now let's take a look at some other snare sounds. When you master any of the following snare drum sounds you will instantly elevate your beatboxing, but they can take some practice. The first one is 'The Inward K Snare' - a must-have sound in your beatbox toolkit. This is an inward sound, meaning you breathe in while making it. Keep practicing and you will get it.
This snare drum sound is called the 'Rimshot' Snare. The Rimshot sound is made using a regular snare drum but instead of hitting the centre of the drum, the drumstick is struck against the rim of the drum to make the sound.
This snare drum sound is called the 'PF Snare. The PF snare sound is made using a regular snare drum when the drumstick strikes centre of the drum.
This snare drum sound is called the '808 Snare'. The Roland TR-808 is the most influential electronic drum machine for beatbox culture. You could programme complete beats with the 808. The early beatboxers would imitate the sounds of the 808, just by using their mouths and this is literally how beatboxing was born. Let's learn one of the original beatbox snare sounds - the '808 Snare'.
It's time to learn your first 2 basic rhythms!!!
Let's learn another one. This is part 1 to learning the B K BK rhythm. Give it a go!
This is part 2 to learning the B K BK rhythm. Let's take it up a level!
Now try the B K B BK rhythm. We're stepping it up a level again... Let's go!
Time for a rhythm exercise. Trying out different beats and rhythmic exercises will help develop your individual sounds, your overall beatbox sound, help you to beatbox faster rhythms and develop your sense of timing.
Learn this simple breathing technique. Many new beatboxers don't understand when to breathe in while beatboxing. Well, with many beatbox sounds, you can breathe in OR out when you make them. Here you will learn to breathe in and out while making the bass drum and hi hat sounds.
Learn this simple breathing technique and then practice using it in all of your rhythms. Here we will practice taking a breath in through the nose or mouth in-between making sounds.
It's time to look back over what you've learned so far. Use the Bass Drum, Hi Hat and Snare Drum sounds to practice the rhythms you have learned. Practice the breathing techniques too. Explore each sound. Try applying more or less pressure when making each sound. Try changing the shape of your mouth when making each sound.
Now let's add some bass to your beats. Humming while beatboxing is the simplest way to add bass. There are many other ways like using Throat Bass or Liprolls but 'Humming Bass' is the place to start.
Fills add intricacy and texture to your beats. They can make your beats sound more interesting and groovy. Here we will learn 3 of my favourite basic beatbox fills.
Now let's spice up your beats by adding fills to them. We will practice putting each of the fills we've learned into simple rhythms.
You've learned how to make the bass drum, hi hat, snare drum, humming bass and some fills. Now let's try putting ALL of them together. You've got this!
