Currently serving as the head basketball coach at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, Ellis entered the 2016-2017 season as a distinguished member of the elite club of 800-game winners in collegiate basketball, a feat accomplished during the Chanticleers' 85-73 victory over Appalachian State on January 14, 2017. His coaching legacy is further exemplified by the distinction of being the sole coach in NCAA Division I history to achieve 150-plus wins at four different institutions, namely South Alabama, Clemson, Auburn, and Coastal Carolina.
