Welcome to the Basic Light course.
This course will help you better understand light and learn how to work with it. We'll start with the basics - the physics of light, learn about different lighting devices and accessories that change light, and how light works. Then we'll learn how to create beautiful scenes, both during the day and at night, using light to create atmosphere. All of our lessons are based on my years of experience, so you'll get a lot of useful tips.
This course will help you make your videos or photos much better. With our tips and exercises, you'll quickly improve your skills and be able to create really impressive footage. Join us and we'll show you how easy it is to work with light and make your projects more colorful.
What is the course schedule?
We recommend that you take this course at your own pace to master each concept. Often people feel overwhelmed when they try to master a bunch of materials at once, which can lead to dropping out or burnout - when you want to go through everything quickly with sleepless nights non-stop, but in reality, there is very little sense in it.
Don't do that, if you agree, then read on!
In learning, a strategy that involves slowly and regularly absorbing the material is usually more effective, allowing you to conserve energy and better understand all the concepts. To complete this course, you will need about 2 hours to familiarize yourself with all the materials, and an additional 5 hours or so to consolidate or practice.
This lesson is a fundamental theoretical basis for effective work with light. We'll take a closer look at why we need to use artificial lighting during filming, what the main tasks are, and how to use it correctly to achieve the desired visual effects. During this lesson, you will not only understand how natural sunlight works and what changes occur to daylight when it enters the room through windows, but you will also get an idea of how you can use this knowledge to the maximum effect.
In this lesson, we'll dive into the technical side of working with light, taking a closer look at the most common types of lighting devices, their key characteristics, and revealing the disadvantages and advantages of each.
We will help you understand how to choose the most suitable lighting device for the specific tasks of your shoot. This lesson is designed to give you a deeper understanding of how different lighting devices can affect image quality by creating a certain atmosphere or mood, and how this knowledge can be applied in practice to achieve professional results with light.
Iron, iron and more iron!
The lesson is about the types of racks, how to use different racks and stands, and what is the difference between them. I talk about the safety rules for using the racks. Here you will learn what a griphead, extensions, and sandbag are. After this lesson, you'll be able to confidently and safely set up your gear on the stands and not worry about it during the shoot.
In this video tutorial, we'll take a closer look at two key types of light - soft and hard.
You'll learn what makes light soft or hard, how these properties affect your subjects, and what gear you can use to achieve the desired effect. We'll explore how to properly shape light for different shooting scenarios, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to enhance your videos
This lesson is an introduction to the simplest and most basic lighting techniques using only one light source.
We'll take a close look at the different types of lighting that occur depending on where the light source is positioned in space and how that positioning can change the way objects, including faces, look and the overall look of the shot. For example, we'll learn about key lighting, where the light source is positioned to primarily illuminate the subject, backlighting, which creates strong contrast and highlights shapes, and many other approaches.
In addition, we'll discuss how using different angles and distances of the light source can affect the mood and emotional expression of a shot. This lesson will serve as a solid foundation for understanding more complex lighting scenarios that we will cover in the following sections of the course, where multiple light sources will be used. It's important to note that even with a single light source, you can create incredibly diverse and expressive shots, making this topic extremely interesting to learn.
A lesson on how to shape a light beam, limit and block light. In this lesson, you'll learn what flags are useful for and get to know the term “negative fill” and how it works. We'll use examples to show you how various light modifiers work.
In this video tutorial, we'll deepen your knowledge of key concepts in working with light:
contrast, volume, and a technique known as negative fill.
You will learn what contrast is in the context of lighting, how it affects our perception of an image, and how to achieve the desired level of contrast. We'll discuss what light volume means and how it can be used to add depth and realism to your images, and reveal the secrets of using negative fill effectively to create dynamic and expressive images.
In this lesson, we'll build a detailed lighting scheme for a daytime kitchen scene, discussing the key aspects of drawing, fill, and background lighting. We'll cover the basics of creating a realistic daytime scheme that simulates sunlight, helping you understand how to achieve a professional look for your shoot.
Join us in this lesson and start experimenting with light today!
Practice, practice, and more practice.
The second practical lesson on building realistic daylight schemes. We continue practicing and in this lesson, we shoot by combining natural daylight on location with artificial light sources. We talk about how to use sunlight, limit it, and additionally simulate it for the right volume and frame.
The first lesson on lighting night interior scenes.
We'll talk about what the DNA of truly cinematic night light consists of.
After this lesson, you will learn what contrast is, color contrast, and how to avoid noisy images in night photography. You'll also learn about one of the key concepts in building schemes - light motivation.
We'll analyze common beginner mistakes in night photography and tell you how to overcome them.
The second lesson in the practice of building nighttime light patterns. We consolidate our knowledge from the previous video with a simpler circuit. We show a simple and very effective scheme with only 3 devices. The knowledge of how to light a night shot simply and beautifully will definitely stick in your head!
One of the most important stages of every shoot is undoubtedly
the pre-production stage - preparation.
In this lesson, I'm going to share with you my most valuable tips gained from many years of experience on the set. We will go over the various stages of preparation for a shoot, discuss the key aspects of interacting with different crew members, and you will also have the opportunity to learn about my unique personal method of choosing the best light for a particular shoot, which will allow you to quickly and efficiently create the most appropriate set using a variety of lighting devices and accessories. Providing the perfect atmosphere for your project.
Well, here we are, the final lesson of our course on basic lighting. In this lesson, I'm going to analyze two real-life projects that I worked on personally as a gaffer. Let's analyze two commercials - an advertisement for the confectionery company Vatsak and a commercial for the global brand CASETIFY.
We will tell you and show you schematically how both commercials were lit and what problems we faced during the preparation and shooting process.
is an online course that will help you understand what light is and how to work with it. Together, we will go from the simplest things in working with light to building realistic and cinematic schemes in interiors.
