It is fantastic that you have decided to take this course! We are confident that your transition from zero Bulgarian to a confident reader who is eager to learn will be smooth and pleasant.
Before you start learning, please take a look at the short guide on how to make the most of the course. If you like, you can also print out the Alphabet files that we have uploaded for you in Lesson 2: About the Bulgarian Alphabet - it will be quite handy to take notes as the course progresses.
Explore the Bulgarian alphabet with 30 letters—six vowels and 24 consonants—read left to right, and learn four groups: true friends, false friends, new friends, and strange friends.
Learn the first six Bulgarian vowels: A, Ъ, O, У, Е, and И, and how to shape the mouth for Ъ. Е is pronounced open as in egg.
Explore the new letters of the Bulgarian alphabet and their familiar sounds. Practice pronouncing each letter using visual prompts to memorize their shapes.
Review everything learned so far in the Bulgarian basics. Practice recognizing and pronouncing sets of three letters at a time to reinforce recall.
Learn the final three Bulgarian letters, including short e and the soft sign, and how they combine with vowels to shape sounds; practice daily to master reading.
Learn the Bulgarian l pronunciation, including regional variations such as Sofia, and the rule to pronounce la before certain letters, with examples like luna, lama, look, wilma, let, and live.
You can download the printable file and listen to the recording as you read the cities and countries in Bulgarian. Once again, we encourage you to say everything out loud!
Learn to say goodbye in Bulgarian, including bye, see you soon, and have a nice day or evening, plus pronunciation of informal ciao and formal goodbye.
This is a very basic introduction. If you wish to challenge yourself further, we have prepared for you a file that teaches you the questions and an audio recording so you can listen to the correct pronunciation.
You can also find 2 attachments - one for some countries in Bulgarian and some occupations. Can you find your country and occupation there?
Learn Bulgarian questions for beginners: how are you, do you speak English, what is this, is there or are there, where's the toilet, and how to ask for the bill.
If you want or need to learn the numbers to 100 in Bulgarian, check out the additional files.
